That's the sensible thing to do imo, I mean if the shop could offer say a 6 month no quibble warranty and you trust them, then it might be worth considering - any less and well it's quite a risk and you could end up seriously out of pocket
Even with a 6 month iron clad guarantee which I can't anywhere offering, I'd still get a slim myself, and yes never seem to hear of slims overheating.
