WiFi support – if anything does prevent gigabit from becoming widespread, it would be because money was invested in making WiFi cheaper, faster, and more common. In this respect, Playstation 3 is still able to support growth. Although if WiFi becomes the standard for networking and accelerates beyond 54mpbs (802.11g), the Playstation 3 will be left slightly behind as it comes out of the box. As of now, 802.11n is slated for finalization mid 2007 and will run at 540mbps. In order to take advantage of wireless at that speed PS3 would have to use the gigabit Ethernet connection through an 802.11n wireless adapter or router, that provides or is on an 802.11n network. Adding a USB wireless 802.11n wireless card is a feasible solution to reach higher bandwidth, but given that USB 2.0 runs at 480mbps, there would be a bottleneck through that approach relative to 801.11n speeds.
