I'm most likely a douché for saying it so directly, but my own opinion is that believing in any such thing as a god, is irrational.
God is an acronym we human's have made up to give us rest in those aspects of nature, which we do not yet comprehend or understand.
An example. Look at the Vatican. They have always denied big bang, god created the earth.
Actually the last pope, he said the vatican finally accepted that the big bang did occur and that it created the universe and/or the earth... However, god was the one behind big bang that pulled the strings... It can go on like that forever. There will always be something before, and we will never be fully satisfied without a god, as our curiosity will never be able to be satisfied. In that respect, I can accept and believe in the term "god" as what manipulated whatever we know from the unknown. With this formulation of the term, god is also subject to change, he is never the same all the time, as we learn and get more knowledgeable.
However, believing in him as a humanoid being or just a sentient being that created everything - and which stops us from looking at thing objectively is just plain stupid, sorry but... What created god then? I cannot follow that logic.
Those ideals are 2000 years old, when we still thought the earth was flat...
I love the people carry over their culture to their children, and its amazing how cultures can vary and how different and intriguing people can be, but sometimes its a shame that religion gets carried over as well, instead of giving the individual his or her chance to decide for themselves. Of course, they can decide for themselves, and there are many atheists and agnostics, but... I cannot help but think that its harder to make an objective choice here, when you have always been used to it.
My 2 cents rant
