I think the problem was a combination of a not so scientific method of frantically changing files, sometimes hitting refresh, and hoping.
I ended up just recopying the backup, letting MM prompt me with the firmware notification/fix (and letting it do it's thing), and then copying over the above patch files.
I did not realize I would achieve my life's purpose at such a young age.

You could google translate all the in game subtitles and then replace them xD that would take a long time though.
