I guess what I consider to be a "decent" game is much much different from your expectations for a $60 title (I bought it on Steam so didn't pay as much but still), so let me tell you from an Aliens fan perspective of "why" it sucked for many of us who were waiting 5+ years for this pile of feces.
1. The story. It makes no sense when they claim its canon and a direct sequel to Aliens. Its just so contrived and nonsensical. The events in the Aliens movie are completely ignored. Why the hell is the Sulaco BACK at LV426? They even ask that question in the game and no answer is ever given. So right away a great opportunity to explain this eerie situation is squandered, and you are left asking WTF? How is Hicks calling for help when he left with Ripley, Newt, and Bishop at the END of Aliens? Ok they are ignoring Alien 3 and Resurrection, great I hate those movies but totally ignore the last moments of the movie you are making a direct sequel to? Lazy writing exists the whole way threw this crap fest. And yeah your buddy pulling a grenade because a chest burster pops out of his chest? Right screw your friends, I'm taking you ALL with me. That made a ton of sense. They also squandered a great opportunity to make you feel like you are going in as a bad ass marine and slowly being mentally torn apart like the films. You care nothing for the other characters. Oh the chick had a face huger attached to her face, oh well who freaking cares? While you are playing the game your AI companions will holler out the names of the alien types that are attacking you the first time they even see them? How the HELL do they know what a lurker or a spitter is just by looking at them for the VERY FIRST TIME? It's not like they were briefed or prepared against the enemy they were going up against! Don't get me started on the human enemies. Just what we wanted as fans "Call of Wayland Yutani: Alien Warfare". 3 Levels of fighting aliens, 3 levels of fighting humans, and 3 levels of mixed, and a boss fight. 9 levels, 4.5 hours of game play. That's not a $60 game that's a PSN/Live title.
2. The AI. The companion AI "O'Neil" is just terrible, he gets more in the way then he helps. He is completely stupid and even when you are playing with friends he's still tagging along and only gets in the freaking way. When he has the most powerful weapon in the game, he doesn't even use the smart gun to anyone's advantage and you can't take it from him. He runs way ahead of you for no reason at all, stares at walls while you are getting attacked, he's just annoying and pointless and easy to hate when he's supposed to be your buddy that you care about and want to protect.
The aliens have no intelligence about them at all. Unless there is a cut of the movie I haven't seen where moon walking aliens slink away into a corner and jitter all over the place, then they behave nothing like the Aliens from the film I remember. They jump right in front of your cross hairs, and are easy as hell to kill. Really? They get stuck in the environment, if they get stuck in doors it can screw you over at least on the PC version.
3. The boss fight. Or lack there of. So after completing the game in 4.5 hours I get treated to a boss fight with the queen that can be beat in less then 2 mins. Fight a few human AI's push some buttons, and then a cut scene, that's it. No satisfaction to be had at all.
4. THE LIES! THE DAMN DIRTY LIES! There was a media blackout for this game, and for a reason. The demo footage shown from 2012 is nothing like what we got AT ALL. The AI was smarter, the interaction with the AI was spot on to what we wanted but not what we got, even portions of the game they showed us didn't even make it into the game. It was hyped to hell and back and videos I saw of "ACTUAL GAME PLAY" had me sold.
I can go on and on but no one wants to read a long winded rant thread. My point though, this game fails and disappoints on so many levels that it almost brings tears to my eyes. A decent game? No this is Duke Nukem 4 bland and boring bad.
