Well I can give you an answer about why it's higher now with artic silver than with mx compound. They truely are the same temps, figuratively speaking. Mx compound has no cure time, so the temp you get from it now is the temp it is always going to have until it's spent, which is something like 8 years, less if you use the heck out of it. With artic silver, there is a 200 hour curing time before you get the actual temp. It won't be a huge drastic change, but it will be 3-5°c on average after the curing process is complete, which brings you back down to what it was at. For this reason, I always use mx compound and the pea method, not the rice grain. Everyone swears by artic paste, and it is top notch, but it's condiuctive and needs to cure, where mx isn't and doesn't, and they both give you the same temp results, give or take 1-2°c

Also, for reference. I have a slim console, just took it out the box, never used, stock paste....but hasn't been spent because its never been used. I get around 62°c on either chip, give or take 1-2°c, on idle after 20 minutes at dash. So if you can get temps around 65°c or lower on the chips with a used console, which has stressed thermal compound under the IHS, then you did all you can do by replacing thermal paste. Only way to get better temps is to replace paste under IHS, which is not for the faint of heart, and do a fan mod, which is also helpful. Basically, the temp sensor reads the temp of the console, and when it senses the console is getting too hot, it kicks the fan up to help. As long as the fans are going full speed, then the console is cool enough. If the fans get really load, like overbearing loud, then the console can't get it cool enough with fans and then it's time to worry about the console. Main thing to remember is, it's a console. Play it and have fun. If you spend all your time worrying about how hot it is and if it's going to die, you will not have any fun. Just do what you can do, and hope for the best. Remember, airflow is key.
