ok, then if it's only software switches, does that mean there is a potential to enable OtherOS on Slims? Or without the access to OtherOS in the 1st place on the Slims, no kind of access is possible?

Well I actually run a small time home-based gaming repair shop so I get extra PS3s all the time. I have a slim on 3.15, a BC 80 gig on 3.15 and a 60 gig I just obtained still sitting on 2.41. So I plan on leaving the 60 gig offline.

Im Really mad about this I got my ps3 over then xbox360 just for this I wanted to use my ps3 as a pc when they stop makein games for it but now it seems I cant do at I payed 600$ for it & this is what I get!! they better not take my full ps1,ps2, backwards compatible away from it ever I loved sony why cant they just fix it damit!!

Seybold says the update is optional but if users choose not to update they will lose:

* Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat
* Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later
* Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings)
* Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later

That means the update is pretty much required more than "optional."

Those guys at Sony are truly the Devil, they choosed April's fool day to spread confusion among the community, most of people will think it's a joke and make the fatal update.

a lot of people are getting excited, but can we really just install a custom firmware without any type of hardware exploit first?, surely it's not a simple as that and as such this is probably useless to most ps3 owners. In the hope it is a simple matter i am holding off updating even though i was originally going to, but TBH I think geohot is gonna release something which is not viable to most users.

The update is out but using PS3ProxyGUI still works for me. I was able to connect to PSN and still keep 3.15.

Just a heads up.
