It only does everything...except linux, MKV, legal movie backups, external hard drives with modern file systems, hulu, printing to Sony printers, document editing, and using websites such as Sony.com, Gamefly.com, etc
So basically, it just does games and blurays. Oh, and false advertising...it does that too. |

LOL, at everyone getting all bent out of shape. Cinavia is currently only on cinema soundtracks and professional equipment. As far as i'm aware it has not appeared on any retail disc.
It is basically an audio watermark that is locked to specific hardware, in theory it would not work on a retail disc anyway as they are made to be played on multiple types of hardware. On a digital download it could work however. I reiterate it is ONLY present on pirated copies using a line in or cam audio source. This is just another anti-sony hype. IF anyone has seen cinavia on a legal backup i'd love them to prove it by posting a youtube video. |

dont no if this will work but if u disconnect it from the internet it should play the movie because it has no database to compare the sound to. so it should just play the movie.

So far the only films affected by cinavia have been The losers (seen on the dvdscr) Wolfman (on the cam and TS versions) Shutter island (R5, worked for some people) Repo Men (TS) Splice (R5) Of these i have since downloaded legit Bluray rips or dvd rips of the losers, wolfman and repo men and had no problems. I have never heard of any problems with the rips of shutter island either I have been around the movie pirating scene for years, and know a lot of insiders and never have i heard of it in a legit scene BRrip or dvdrip. It's all a lot of hype about nothing at the moment, cinavia works by applying an inaudible code which basically says "this file should be played on x hardware" if the hardware does not match then it fails to play, therefore applying it to digital downloads would be easy as a drm method, but applying it to a physical disc is difficult due to the many variations in hardware. |

Most of the R5 dvd's aren't legit, and you must remember that a lot of R5's are really nothing but scan's of an original print, just to make sure they can at least get some cash before any 'pirated' version hits the street.. Yes piracy in Russia is even so far that publishers are rushing 'bad' retails just to get some money...

So let's say it is true that this protection only effects media made with certain equipment...is that any better? I mean, by that logic, this would only serve to prevent the use of media that one owns completely (like a wedding video or something; a video that belongs to you and no one else). ...And if it really is a code that is inside the audio track, it can't be that big...as companies add movie after movie after movie to the database, either the database will get too large to use on a system like the PS3, or the database with be so vague that every video is detected as pirate. |

Cat and mouse!
![]() I would imagine the Cinavia watermark is a short burst of data code embedded in the audio at just the right frequency to be picked up accurately by a camcorder or any other recording device but not within human hearing range. It would be one piece of unique code that would be applied to every release so that any machine (e.g. your PS3) that has the Cinavia detection has only to detect one watermark regardless of the film being protected, therefore a huge database of protected content would be unnecessary. Has anyone tried slowing down the audio of a protected film at the point of detection to see if the watermark becomes audible? If that IS how it works you could apply a low pass audio filter to that section of the audio track to filter out the data. Just a theory! And to anyone complaining about it: If you don't like it, just wait till you can buy the movie or go watch it in person. We all know that movie piracy is a game of cat and mouse and you can't blame the cat for chasing! You just have to find a smarter way to get the cheese! |
