[Tutorial] How to Jailbreak your PS3 with BlackCat USB

This tutorial will teach you how to flash and run PSGroove on your BlackCat USB board. This will allow you to run homebrew and backup manager on your Playstation 3. This tutorial was originally created by macanazo.

This tutorial was written/tested under a Windows 7 x64/x86(32 bit). Other Windows operating versions should work just fine.

Files you will need:

Getting your PC to recognize your Blackcat USB Board
  1. Put the Blackcat in DFU mode by flipping both switches to the 1 an 2 positions.
  2. Connect Blackcat to your PC, and press the RESET button.
  3. Open Device Manager (Right Click MY COMPUTER, and click Properties, then click DEVICE MANAGER) .
  4. Click on ACTION menu, and click on "Add Legacy Hardware" (Note it does not appear right away give it a few minutes to appear)
  5. A wizard should pop up, select the advanced option.
  6. Highlight "Show All Devices" and click Next.
  7. Click "Have Disk", then browse where ever you installed Amtel, the default should be here: C:\Program Files (x86)\Atmel\Flip 3.4.1\usb\
  8. Select atmel_usb_dfu.inf
  9. Once driver is installed, press the RESET button on Blackcat again, and it should show correctly on Device Manager.

Flashing PSGroove on your Blackcat

  1. Start up Amtel Flip software, and select target device AT90USB162. (Should be a small button of a microchip in the top left)
  2. Go into Settings and select a communication medium, choose USB. Your Blackcat information should now show up.
  3. Go to File, hit Load Hex File, and load the Hex file you downloaded earlier (psgroove_blackcatusb.hex)
  4. Erase, Blank Check it, and flash/write the Hex file onto the chip.
  5. Unplug Blackcat from your PC.
  6. On the Blackcat, flip both switches back down.

Your done, and should have successfully flashed PSGroove on your Blackcat

Now all you have to do is boot your PS3 properly with your PSgroove flashed USB board (tutorial coming soon).

hey Pirate great work, I manage to do the tutorial, since I had a blackcat board around from modifying my sb5101 modem anyways, I did everything now how am I able to tell if its working this is what I'm doing, I loaded the backup manager pkg into the root of my pspgo since its formatted in FAT32 also have loaded it into my phone's external microsd memory which is also FAT32. now this is what I do

1. disconnect and reconnect the power from my PS3 Slim.

2. Plug USB cable with blackcat board attached.

3. press POWER button, immediately right after I press the EJECT button.

4. light on the board flashes a few time while PS3 boots.

5. PS3 boots, light on board is now steady.

6. connect my pspgo with backup manager in root, no installation comes up under game menu.

7. connect my microsd card through my phone, also no installation comes up under game menu.

thats all I got, havent tried a USB flashed drive since I dont have one available at the moment.

is there any other indication to find out if everything I did correct and working?

will try with a USB flash drive later on today.

thanks in advance for your response

yes firstly its booting, which means you flashed the blackcat board correctly, i have come across someone that flashed the wrong hex file and the machine wouldn't boot, so that is a good sign.

Did you get the install pkg on the XMB under game or whatever its called, i now saw that no instalation appears when you insert the blackcat, it should appear right when you turn the ps3 not when you connect the psp, i know, did you turn the switches from dfu mode to normal mode before connecting the board to the ps3???

Noob clarification

Hi, just wanted to clarify as Im totally noob in programming:

With the Blackcat loaded with this file and a external HHD drive (or the internal one) am I ready to back-up and play?

Nothing else needed?

Also, does any external usb HDD works with PS3?

Thank you

at first I didn't but yeah I did switch the switches back from 1,2 state to where they were before, just got a USB flash drive gonna try that now

no I didn't get the install pkg under the game menu tab

ok also tried it with the USB flash drive still nothing did the hex I use was the patch one with the backup manager or without? since your saying that the install .pkg should've came out even if I didn't connected any USB drives
