[Tutorial] Jailbreak the PS3 with AT90USBKEY

The following tutorial is how to jailbreak your PS3 via AT90USBKEY. Tutorial was originally created by ThreeDog via Maxconsole. You can grab the appropriate HEX files for your USB board here.

For this tutorial I am using the AT90USB1287, you can purchase that here.

What you need:
Driver Setup:
  1. Install Amtel Flip
  2. Go to the directory your installed Amtel (C:\Program Files (x86)\Atmel\Flip 3.4.1) and go in the USB folder.
  3. Copy libusb0.dll and libusb0_x64.dll to the BIN folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Atmel\Flip 3.4.1\bin)

Hardware Preparation:
  1. Plug in your AT90USB to your PC via USB.
  2. Let it install all the drivers (should do it automatically).
  3. Next you need to place your AT90USB in program mode, if you don't flash properly this is probably where you messed up.
  4. Hold the RST and HWB buttons (see pic)
  5. Release RST button.
  6. Release HWB button.

At this point you will be promoted to install more drivers, so use the drivers you copied over earlier (C:\Program Files (x86)\Atmel\Flip 3.4.1\usb).

How to flash PSGroove to your AT90USB:
  1. Atmel Flip
  2. Select "Device"
  3. Select the USB Board, in our case: AT90USB1287
  4. Select 'File' - 'Load Hex File, use the HEX you downloaded from above.
  5. Select 'Settings' - "Communication" - "USB" - then "Open"
  6. Press "Erase Target Device Memory" to clear its memory
  7. Click the 'Program Target Device Memory" button.
During the writing process, you should see a split second of loading/writing dialog which confirms you have flashed your USB board, if you do not see this then you are doing something wrong, go back to hardware prep.

Thats it, should be working. Go ahead and plug it to your PS3 (power down Phat, unplug slim).

Power up your PS3, press the POWER then eject button.

If flashed correctly your AT90USB should be displaying a bright RED led light, and then change to green (indicating hack worked).

Copy backup manager to a external USB, and copy it to your PS3

make sure you point it to (C:\Program Files (x86)\Atmel\Flip 3.4.1\usb) NOT \bin. =) thanks for tutorial.

Great Tut, i'm a bit out of date with what new devices which have been allowed to exploit this and whatnot. I am going to get the Wrobot USBtinyASP Shield but my PS3 is still on firmware 3.10 - i think. Will this be suitable for the hack or not?

Thanks

I have managed to get the USB Dev Board working perfectly and have got the Backup Manager installed, however after I have installed my backup and press load the PS3 goes back to the main menu and only shows the other game in the console (not the game I want to play which I backed up. Is there anything I am doing wrong?

Thanks in advance, Help would be appreciated.
