Out of curiousity, what are the main advantages for running other os's such as windows 7, linux ? Why is it so sought after

Because if you have linux on PS3, you can run most of open-source software on this, include: torrent clients, media player (vlc), ftp/ssh/openvpn server/squid proxies.

And ps3 it's more most cheaper solution for using powerful CELL: for brute-forcing hashes (md5/sha) and cryptography passwords.
