It may or may not. Try it? Maybe use a more up to date GREEN HDD? Or buy one of those 3.5 SDDs that costs a fortune. :D

I did this also, i got a male to female sata 7 pin extension from amazon. I had gotten a power extension also, but the PS3 does NOT PROVIDE enough power to work with a larger drive, so i got a power supply from newegg that goes from the wall to 4pin, and i just wired the 4pin to work with sata power. I tried to use a 5900rpm 1.5TB and the ps3 would not finish formatting it correctly, but the 7200rpm 1tb works fine. i have a casing made of aluminum, i could post pics if wanted.

edit: I forgot to mention that my PS3 is a slim.

I did this about 2 weeks ago, it works.

BTW be warned about that Xecuter HDXT thing, I see a lot of internal hard drives in ps3's are sideways, mine wasn't and mine is a phat ps3.

So that thing wouldn't fit in my ps3, I had to use the male to female sata cable method, external hard drive is a 500gb hitachi 7200rpm drive powered by a sata caddy I had lying around. works perfectly although the wire is a bit fiddly, had to put a sponge in there to hold the damn cable in the ps3 XD

I've already tried this like 2 years ago (when my PS3 broke and I lost everything......). The ONLY issue I have with this is if you ever, you hit the SATA extention (that is really really not in a solid state), then you will lose everything. If you change from one hard drive to another, you must reformat both. (I was on the 3.01 firmware, I don't think it has changed). So, my advice: Do a full system backup (saves, pictures, movies, music, etc...) before trying anything. But, If you won't hit your PS3 in any ways, then: GO FOR IT! :D

This is great and with only a 40gb internal on my PS3 currently and a 360gb 3.5 sata just lying around i definitely should im just reluctant to have another power source especially controlling such an integral yet fragile piece of the system. And they do get hot these adapter jobbies.
Is there any slow down in processing data etc?
I was just about to ask if we can wire it up to a spare on the ps3 board itself but hecll,if im gonna do anything like that i might as well just buy another 2.5 but bigger.
Having been Xbox 360 only until recently you get use to not having the option of third party hdd etc well not untill 9199 anyways.
Lmfao,Microfots last kernel patch allowd us to finally use third party usb peripherals for saving etc while Sonys last firmware update did away with ANY USB compatibility entirely.

If you use an 3,5" SATA you wont have a slow down. It will be even faster if you use an 7200RPM (RPM=Rounds per Minute Most 3,5" HDDs have 7200RPM some more some less.) instead a 5400RPM (Standard PS3) HDD.

I have been thinking about this since i found out that big filed games wont play off an external HDD.
I thought about getting a new 2.5" SATA HDD to sling in my PS3 but i dont like spending money.
Then i thought about connecting up my 3.5" SATA to my PS3 and powering it off a seperate power lead.
I saw a tut on YouTube showing the very same thing.Looks easy enough.
then i had another thought.

Would this work.

I guess big filed games need to be on a PS3 formatted HDD.
You take your external SATA HDD and connect it upto the PS3 and let it format it.

Put back in the PS3 the original HDD.

Connect the external HDD back into its caddy.

Power up the PS3 in JB mode.

Plug in the external USB HDD formatted by the PS3.

Would this make the PS3 throw a right woobly and goe tits up.
Or would this let a backup manager backup the games to the external HDD allowing big filed games to play.No splitting involved.

The backup managers must recognise the PS3 formatted HDD so why cant it recognise a USB external HDD formatted by the PS3.

Is this a kooky idea.

Has anybody tried it..

Yes i tried this already it was my first thought to do this too. But unfortunately this aint working. The PS3 doesnt recognice the HDD if you connect it via USB.

Which Data? The one on the Internal Sata HDD? Yes. The Other Data from the old HDD can be copied to another HDD which is connected using Comgenies Awesome file Manager. Just copy all the content of Dev_HD0 to the external USB HDD and then copy it back later on again using Comgenies File Manager to the new connected Sata HDD. That was the way i did it.
