Jailbnreak without BD Drive - Minimus - PSGroove
Hi all
I'm new to the forum and in fact the whole PS3 jailbreaking 'scene', so excuse me if I come across a bit daft! I've got a Minimus AVR dev board, and have successfully jailbroken my 3.41 PS3 without issue, I believe, with a PSGroove Hex. I can successfully use the Install Packages option to install Blackb0x ftp server and a backup manager, but when I try to run either of them I just get a black screen. My PS3 does not have a Blu-Ray drive and at the time the controller board for that was not connected. Is that the problem? Do I need a Blu-Ray drive in order to run content? Cheers |

dont know.. hmmm have you been able to connect via ftp and filzilla. you could also try the emu's or some homebrew games to see if they work, or a different hex.
i think the backup managers use blueray emulation to run games from hdd's so having no drive could be your problem.

Failing that, I'll get a Blu-Ray drive from Ebay. I do have a fully-working 3.50 machine but I'm reluctant to start messing with that. |

Just one final thing guys. What do you think would happen if I attached a faulty Blu-Ray drive? So, it still spins up but won't read a Blu-Ray disc. Do you think homebrew would work then? There's a cheap one on Ebay at the moment so I'm wondering if it's worth a gamble.

Don't bother buying a BD drive off ebay, if the drive board isn't working a new drive is going to help.
If the drive board is missing or fried there's unfortunately no easy fix (there exists one but it involves re-soldering chips from the old board to the new (if even you have the old board, otherwise there is no hope) I was in this position, I just sold it off to someone to use it as a media server. |

Thanks for the reply Mike.
I do have the controller for the drive though, which I've been told is in working order. I just don't have a drive yet. So I'm wondering if a working controller + broken drive = happy homebrew! |

Just an update if anyone is interested!
Yesterday I installed the Blu-Ray drive from my CECHH03 3.50 PS3 into my CECHG03 3.41 PS3 to see if I could get any homebrew working. But, whilst the connections appeared to be the same and the drive accepted a disk ok, it did not show up on the XMB ![]() So, I guess the drive was incompatible. Oh well, I'm currently winning an Ebay auction for a faulty CECHG03 drive! |

Unfortunately I to have been down this road. What I found it is that the bluray drive circuit board is married to your PS3 motherboard and cannot be swapped. So even if you buy the exact same bluray drive off ebay it still will not work because the circuit board isn't married to your motherboard. It doesn't matter if the bluray lens is dead but if there is a problem with the circuit board or if it's not the original circuit board from when the PS3 was manufactured you are SOL.
