PS3 Slim Twin USB Mod

***ADDED LIST OF ITEMS I BOUGHT AND WHERE I BOUGHT THEM FROM AT BOTTOM OFF POST FOR ANYONE WANTING THE SAME***

ok i have been wanting rear usb ports on my ps3 slim since i bought it (3 months ago)
the only guide i found was this:-
http://www.ps3hax.net/showthread.php?t=21940
by j0nnymofo

*****edit if you have a phat ps3 also have a look at this buy GregoryRasputin :-
http://www.ps3hax.net/showthread.php?t=11269 end*****

but you can only use the front or rear one at a time not together
also i have my tv wall mounted and a usb cable extention running in the wall so i can attach a pseye without the wires showing
j0nnymofo's mod would also need a booster putting in for the extra usb cable lenth.
so after alot of searching i found that all the usb hubs you can buy from pound shops are usless even for normal use on any ps3.

but then i found this in my spare pc parts box

i plugged it into my ps3 as normal then plugged the hidden usbextention going up to my tv and pluged my pseye into that and it worked (if i plugged the usbextention directly into the ps3 without this hub then i get "no pseye detected" on screen)

so on with the hard mod

the tools i used

the ps3

open it up (there are enough guides out there if you have never done this)

carry on and strip the ps3 slim right down to the main board

desolder and remove the usb pins from the main board
this is done by inserting a thin flat screwdriver or as i did it a stanley blade between the usb housing and mainboard (where the red line is in the pic) and desolder the 3 shilding legs highlited in the blue circle's while using the blade to help seperate the usb from mainboard.
then desoler the 8 usb legs highlited in the orange circle's then carefully tilt the usb's forward back towards the board untill you can pop port 2's legs out of the board (the help of a small screwdriver will prob help here also make sure all the legs are compleatlydesoldered or they wont move)

cut a controller usb charging cable in half and the half with the small usb connector needs soldering to the main board where the usb pins have just been delodered from in this order:-
with usb on main board facing you solder wires from left to right red white green black

then solder the other half of the usb cable to the usb pins in the exact same order.
re-seat the usb back in place and re-solder the port 1's pins &shild legs back to the mainboard

remove the rubber from the small usb (this helps it to fit in place better when the ps3 is finnished)

drill a hole in the top half of the heatshild for the wires you have just attached to pass through (the blue highlight is where the front usb's are located when this heatshild is attached to the mainboard)

heat glue the wires into this position

pass the wires through the hole you just drilled

cut the heatshild to fit the twin usb connector where the optical out is situated and check it fits

remove / desolder the optical out from the main board. very simple only 3 solder points to desolder and it will pop off. there are 2 small resistors under the optical out that don’t get in the way so can be left where they are.

solder another cut in half charger cable to the double usbconector in the same order as the front

put the usbconector in place and run the cable inside the heatshild in the same direction as shown in pic also notice some of the black plastic on the rear usb has been cut away to make room for the resistors on the board.

place the top heatshild onto the mainboard and holding the usb in place apply a small amount of heat glue to hold in place.

then heat glue the usb and wires in place on the inside.

re-build the mainboard and heatshelds back together and cut the optical out hole on the plastic lower half of the ps3 shell large enough to alow for access to the new usb ports

sit the mainboard/heatshilds back into the lower half of the ps3 housing and heat glue the rear wires in place as shown here then attach the bdvd back in place

DO NOT REMOVE THE CARD READERS AS I DID HERE AS THE USB HUB WILL STOP WORKING CORRECTLY AS I DESCOVERED AFTER I HAD RE-BUILT THE PS3

the replacement usb hub!!!!! i cannot find a black box brand one anywhere so bought this one from e-bay

remove the usb's from the usb hub (NOT THE CARD READERS AS SHOWN HERE) and solder the 2 rear and 1 front usb wires as shown here (remember the usb wire from the mainboard has the small usb connector and that can now be plugged into the hub

place the wires and usb hub as shown

heat glue the wires and usb hub to the top of the bdvd as shown

close ps3 back up and test

please feel free to ask questions and no this has NOTHING to do with 3.56 / 3.60 / 3.61 custom firmware so DO NOT ASK

ok for those of you wondering why i wanted internal rear usb's and not just attach a usb hub to the front this is why:-

as you can see there are NO wires on show (highlited in the black box) also note the pseye has its base removed and is mounted below the tv (if you remove a small round "pad" from under its base it will fit over the pseye power light. a quick tip for them that are irratated by the bright led light)

i have it all neat and having wires allover would look cluttered

Not very useful..

And you don't show how to link che hub to the ps3.
Anyway you could just use the hub as external device, i don't like cut the ps3's skin

Just plugging in the hub defeats the object though. This is about getting USB sockets on rear of PS3.

I also hate cables coming from front, and have no problem cutting things up lol

Nice DIY project with good pictures

Though I do think an usb expander, like the logic3 nicely fitting on the front with 5 usb ports, is an easier way

the problem with this is i have a hidden usb extention in the wall and this 5 port and also a 4 port that "clips on" i found on e-bay do not boost the signal so the pseye will work

This is useful. The PS3 should've had rear USB ports to start anyway. Also do not put down someone else's work. We frown upon that here.
