In vbox I selected "Linux Fedora 64-bit"
At least that one brings me past the kernel complaint. Now where are the examples? And how do I start learning? I would like to learn how to put stuff on the screen, cursor, letters, blobs, lines, beziers, etc. How much memory do you find appropriate for this kind of work? Mine is now at 256MB

Then you are probably not running your host OS in 64-bit.

yes I am running my host in 64 bit (windows 7 x64 Ultimate), but my proc doesn't support the VT extention which is needed to run 64bit guest OSses in VMWare/VirtualBox..
