Online Update
You can upgrade the Red Ribbon installation from the online official repository, you don’t need to reinstall the distribution from CD.
This update is only designed for the RC 4 or lower with all previous updates.
You need to connect the PS3 to the internet, open a lxterminal and download the file:
wget http://redribbon.sourceforge.net/dow...-2011-09-01.sh
Then, you can execute it:
sudo sh online-update-2011-09-01.sh
And wait until finished.
If while executing it asks:
You are running a kernel (version 2.6.38-powerpc64) and attempting to remove the same version. This is a potentially disastrous action. Not only will /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.38-powerpc64 be removed, making it impossible to boot it, (you will have to take action to change your boot loader to boot a new kernel), it will also remove all modules under the directory /lib/modules/2.6.38-powerpc64. Just having a copy of the kernel image is not enough, you will have to replace the modules too.

Some users like r04drunner from Elotrolado think the standard Linux distro's for the PS3 have some limitations...so what does he does? Builds his own. The Debian Based Linux is called Red Ribbon, its actively being updated and below are the features it offers (and growing).

Operating Modes

The CD has two modes: Direct via LiveCD and installation in support of internal or external storage.
LiveCD

Download and CD recording

First download the compressed zip file that contains the ISO image from the following address:

Once downloaded, unzip it and get the CD ISO image.
The MD5 of the ISO image is cd9c55275bb86e517efa99e8197bfe60.
Now we can proceed to burn the ISO image to CD using the method of "Burn CD Image" in your recording software. This method saves the contents of the ISO file on the CD, does not serve to save the file as it is within the CD.

Install internal hard disk or USB storage media

To use this distribution is necessary to have one of these loaders:

We put the CD into the PS3 and start the loader, after booting from the menu will show the available options:

If you select the storage device manually or automatically, proceed to create the partitions:

• Automatically: This will delete the existing partitions and create partitions by default. This option is recommended.
• Manually: cfdisk will load a program to manually create partitions. This option is only for advanced users.

The creation, modification or removal of partitions never affect GameOS space, ie not deleted and backup programs you may have internal hard disk.
If you are going to use an external HDD or a USB pen, if that will erase data from that external HDD or USB pen, so I advise that you use one that is empty.
We will choose the first option, ie we create the partitions automatically.
If all goes well, a third option called "Continue." Select it and accept it.

Nice point is this distro is small in size and has graf his kernel build in. Once the right partition is created (ps3dd) with the OtherOS++ tools (that ain't so easy for a lot of users) just start the CD and install to internal

I really like this kind of work. Great job, I have deleted my Debian and am doing this install right now

this looks great & thanks to graf for making this possible, but the hardware and driver limitations eg. only 256mb ram, make it pretty pointless to run linux on, i mean it's cool we can run it because we can & $ony can't stop us.

But for me & most people jumping ps3 into linux isn't worth losing online/psn for. So it seems a ps3 jailbreak is strictly about running backups, it seems to be where the money (lol) is at.

I hope devs focus on much better pkgs than just piracy. Maybe look towards getting online on psn again & creating game mods. I'd be happy to join the ps3 jailbreak scene for that.

Linux is as small/big and as useful/pointless as you want it to be

Without serious 3d driver I still get 11 frames a second on a 1920x1080P screen with a 3d screenblanker. Not bad I think, with working rsx driver (and this is the real problem!!) it would fly over the screen.

You are right, it is only 256mb, but a very fast 256mb (3.2 Ghz XDR3) with a very fast swap on the rsx 256 mb (700 Mhz GDDR3) memory

Do note everybody, the release itself is also Spanish, can't find a normal way (preferences) to change the language. Will look into it tomorow.....
and I do also know a little Spanish (if i read it, the Spanish people self speak way to fast for me ) but the option just isn't there.
Also the nfo says other languages have to be implanted....
