With the right soldering skills

With the right soldering skills, is it possible to replace the RAM chips of the PS3 with bigger ones? Or are there address limitations?

I think this is actually possible. I forget where I read it, but I found that the chips used in some of the older models had an alternate version with twice the capacity that should work, at least electrically speaking. The issue from there would be figuring out a way to actually use the extra memory, as I don't think that the PS3 has any means of detecting the amount of available memory, and even if it did, the larger amount of memory could cause all kinds of issues with firmwares and games designed to only run on 256MB. Oh, and there is also the matter of removing surface mount chips without damaging the board...installing the new ones wouldn't be very easy, but removing the old ones would be very hard without specialized equipment. Also, given that you would probably be the only person on earth with a 512MB PS3, I wouldn't expect any CFWs.

But homebrew could be able to? I don’t really care about games and XMB that much, I want a media center and computer in the same box in my living room, if games work, that’s an added value to me.
