Notice I called it format shifting piracy. We didn't need an explanation as to what it is, this is just a simple discussion thread wondering whether people condone piracy or not. Even if I tried not to be a Pirate and obtain some things the 'proper way', there is stuff that can't be found anymore physically, like old movies, old games, old music. There are things that lost complete value with time, basically if you get them from the store they are charging for the plastic only, literally. There are things that are not even sold in certain locations around the world, how am I supposed to buy them legally? xD.

Distribution of different types of media around the net is not always a negative event for companies, it is free promotion to their productions, I have discovered so many kind of music, games, movies, etc, and I have ended buying the original stuff many times or in case of movies or games, I have even bought the original / sequels / prequels or related media.

There is much more that can be said, but I'm done .

Piracy isn't a problem believe me... It doesn't lose them any money.. Heres why

Blank Blu-rays, what are a $1 or so.. So you cant backup games.. your on OFW.. Your GT5 disc (or any game) has a mark on it or for some damn reason it isnt playing..

If you want to play your game.. you break down and buy it again.. because after all no other choice... so you pay $120 for same game... Hell the way it looks Sony accually owes this person a game in all fairness..Why should he pay twice when the disc was damaged.. To produce another copy doesnt cost $60, so why does it for the consumer...

They make alot of money like this...

Then that brings me to PSN classics..

Who has a PSone game that doesn't have a Mark on it.. So anyway say it doesnt and play great.. But in order for you to save that copy to your hard drive you need to Purchase it from PSN store no matter if you own the orginal PSone game or not...
(only $5 or $10) but hell they don't even have the cost of Disc with this one...

They could argue well there is no other way for them to see you own the game..
Well there is... many diffrent ways.. You make a Backup manager for PSX games..
Or PSN verifies what is in the PS3 disc drive and it logs it PSN so you can download a digital copy.. (Now this is how i would of used thier verfication process on PSN for reactivate.)

Which brings me to that.. They can change their terms, and it affects a transaction that was done in the past, and if you dont agree they hold your content until you do...

I really hate the debate of Piracy is bad.. (I agree it is BAD) but so is stealing from your own customers...

If you don't want your property to be stolen, don't steal others...

My advice use your own judgment, you been screwed do what you need to do... If you haven't been affected then don't be a crook... They are bastards but they do make great entertainment... Just don't let them f**k with your rights

i look at the way we unlock our systems and be labled pirates is just BS. if a car company made a car that had a bolt or screw in it somewhere that is a added lockdown to make the car consume more fuel and wear out sooner and u can only parts for that brand, and someone reversed that lockdown so your car used less fuel, lasted longer and kept it safer from breaking is it not better for the end user? yea the car company who also is invested in gas companys and repair shops doesnt make as much money but who cares. the car company has been screwing over its consumers. i think that if piracy really does/did hurt sony i say its justified

That is a huge issue. I can't stand what people think of us that have opened up our electronics. At the same time what people think of me was never much of an issue, but I do get frustrated that an entire group of people get classified as the same thing. In a way it is almost like racism

Just need to educate the haters.. Either they listen or they don't... If they cant see after that what side the evil is on.. Them i'm sorry i have wasted enough time, move on and educate the next one... They will listen eventually..

Im not going to get into a discussion with others or reply to previous comments, im just going to state my views.

1. Backing up your games, in my opinion is not piracy, it is your game, you should have the right to back up said game, as long as you don't upload the game or give it to people on copied disc's or HDD's.
2. The general consensus with the fanboys(PS3), is that all people with CFW are pirates and they are evil.
3. The general consensus with the pirates, is that they try and justify their stealing of games, by saying all people that use CFW pirate games, this is not the case, but the pirates have a one track mind, incapable of understanding that CFW=/= piracy.
4. Pirates give fanboys(PS3) every reason to hate anyone with CFW.
5. Pirates make it so that companies make it extremely hard for those of us that want homebrew.

It's all fine and dandy for us to make legal back ups (US and Canada), but it's quite impossible to find a legal medium to make these back ups. but suuuureee it's ok for you to make a backup. good luck finding out how.

Nintendo is making a killing offering to sell you back all the old NES/Genesis/SNES/Virtual Boy/N64/etc games that you paid big bucks 20+ years ago for. Hey, maybe they're the pirates!

Not to mention the movie and tv industry which is now pushing out 2nd, 3rd and 4th generation remakes of movies done 20 years ago. Charlies Angels TV show again? Huh? Another Nightmare on Elm Street? wat? Rob Zombie Halloween again? forserious?

Take my money, obviously the media and entertainment industry needs it more than i do.

Greg, companies will never let you use homebrew, whether we had people pirating their games or not. They want to make money. If someone can make an app like Showtime why would they ever use the Showtime equivalent that Sony is trying to sell? (For the sake of this example let's pretend Sony was trying to sell one)

Same reason why Apple does not allow Flash on iOS devices. Why would you pay for their AppStore games if you could just play Flash games on the web browser.
