iPhone Wardriving
Potentially stupid question. I know this is a potentially gray area, I looked at the rules and it didn't seem to break any (mods, please correct me if I'm wrong).
I live in a city where most people do not have security on their wireless internet. I also cannot afford the 2GB data package with my iPhone. I found a few instances on other sites that say how to do this but doesn't necessarily fit my needs or situation. I am wanting to automatically join open networks to reduce usage on my cellular data plan. Nothing malicious intended other than free use of the network and hogging a little sliver of bandwidth to browse. Issues I'm running into: I am normally the only person in my vehicle and I'm not able to SAFELY browse around the different menus of the applications and join and everything. I don't exactly like the idea of my present from my grandparents to turn into a tin can because of my fiddling with my iPhone. Has anyone tried this with their iPhone (if you have one) or iPod touch. I know there's an android app available. Sadly, no Android. Keep in mind I have an iPhone 4 so the iDroid, last time I checked, was not compatible.

Just disable mobile data in settings and scan wifi as and when you need connectivity. If you are driving I see no need for it to always be connected and with wifi it would be constantly connecting/disconnecting draining the battery in the process.

I like walking as well. I have no problem with battery life, its just the strain on my data. I can deal with the battery dying a little quicker.
That and I'm wondering how many people that live near me are dumb enough to leave it wide open.

If they're on old routers and technically inept you should find a fair few of open networks. New routers mainly come locked down with WPA by default so no go there.

Yes. Such as Frontier modem/router combos come preconfigured. I am aware of this, thank you though. Mine is more of the geniuses that configure it to be open.
