No, it doesn't mod the backup at all. And - no - unless you use 'direct-boot' from multiMAN, which doesn't work for a lot of games.

Mafia II nad Guitar Hero Smash Hits still not working for me

At first I had to download a "ZLIB.dll" and put it into the discBOOT folder because it was missing, but after copying it, pkg were created without any problem.

Installed them on ps3 (icons showed up), inserted previously burned dvd's, launched game from icon, screen few (2 or 3) times flashed (on/off) , and black screen

lol seriously ?, that's like asking if normal games will destroy your lens.

It is inevitable that over time, perhaps two, three or maybe five years, that a lens would wear out due to constant use, nothing to do with burned disc's, it is just the natural process of wear and tear.

Do you hear the drive spinning/heads moving when you launch the game?

Try to launch the game without the disc and once the black screen appears - insert it.

If you don't hear any sound of drive heads moving - it means that either something is wrong with your disc (bad burn) or you have game data installed, which you should delete.

What firmware do you use?

I can't test with DVD-DL or BD. My tests are with DVD-RW disc and it worked. If one game works - it means that there is nothing wrong with the tool or the process. As the 1st post says: there is no guarantee that it will work for all games, although it should. For example my test is with a black-screen-game POP:TFS and everything is working just fine. No payloads, bdemu, etc... Clean restart - launch game from the icon - all ok.
