So I wanted to try something right off the bat once I learned of the Team Ice elf2self program. Running one of the demo.elf files that shows the 3d graphic capabilities of the PS3.

I remember reading a blog (maybe ps3rips) that noted a demo.elf file that displayed the graphic potential of the ps3. This file was booted using the otheros.bld and once booted it showed some 3d rendering of a smily face and some text. (I have seen another one that is a teapot rotating in 3d) It was merely an example of the otheros demo.

I wanted to convert this 3d rendering demo.elf to demo.self and rename to EBOOT.BIN and use the motorstorm exploit to attempt at running the file. For some reason in my mind this made sense and would be just as good as seeing a hello world. A PS3 game exploit that boots an already constructed elf file on the game side of the operating system.

Only problem is I have yet to get SIMPLE DNS to work.

Anyone out there that can already get the SIMPLE DNS method working feel like giving this a try I would be really interested in the results.... as Im sure would many others.

Of course if this works I already have a line of other questions about the possibilities this could open...

If I could only get it to work I would be so thrilled at testing so many of my own theories...

this elf u are talking about is a linux executable. It won't work on game os.

Yes they are right...
Unfortunently you can't run that cause thats not an elf file nor a self file, they are linux files...
but it was still a nice idea...

i have a simillar idea. the were some ps2 which were an .elf after ripping or not? is it possible to do this method with them?

Another idea I had leads me to ask this...

How large of a download is possible surrounding this method. I remember reading that running a file of the External HDD larger than 4gb is not possible due to file size limitations, would it be possible to put an entire game in the patch folder and download to the PS3 HDD via this update download.

and if so... (I am guessing files would be downloaded to some "game save" location) is there a limitation to the size of game saves.

(just thinking out loud now... thats the point of the "ideas" thread)

any theories?

that otheros demo is actually self booting, i.e doesnt require any elements of linux, that was the point of it, i believe it contains a minimal kernal of it own therefore this hack isnt too out of the relms of possibility, i did consider doing it myself but i also couldnt get the network tools to work


edit: also this will need to be tested on ps3 fw < 2.1 as the rsx bug has been patched in the 2.1 update

I was thinking of testing this also, or something similar (one of the other sample files maybe).
