Just Installed Ubuntu 10.10 with Petitboot but I'm unable to boot [Rebug OS 0.4 (3.55

I have just installed Ubuntu 10.10 using the guide: Guide to install any linux distro you please....and also grafs latest kernel updates(precompiled)
After the installation I shut down PS3, launched lv2patcher, Pressed X at the Linux Entry.
In petitboot I got 2 new entries:
linux: /var/petitboot/mnt/sda5/boot/vmlinux initrd=/var/petitboot/mnt/sda5/boot/initrd.img root=/dev/sda1/ quiet video=ps3fb:mode:5
and another one with "old"
Whenever I select either of these entries I get the following messages:
mount: moutning /dev/sda1 on /root failed: invalid argument
mount: moutning /dev on /root/dev failed: no such file or directory
mount: moutning /proc on /root/proc failed: no such file or directory
target filesystem doesn't have requested /sbin/init
no init found. try passing init= bootarg

What should I do in order to boot Ubuntu?

Playstation 3 Slim 320GB
Image used: ubuntu-10.10-alternate-powerpc+ps3.iso
Installed on a external HDD 2.5 with 3 Partitions:
Partition1: ext4 39.74GB
Partition2: swap 0.26GB
Partition3: fat32 40GB
CFW: 3.55.2 Rebug with Update 4.

Other questions:
Can I directly boot to Linux via XMB?

Can you link to the guide you used?

Seems to me you are using the old way to install because you use lv2patcher?

External USB is a lot slower as the internal HD ...

The normal way to run Linux is to install the "boot_otheros.pkg", run it once and use the recovery button combination to start petitboot.....
(returning the recovery menu with the recovery button combination can be done by using the "boot_gameos.pkg")

I would link you to the gitbrew site for a correct install guide, sadly they are still down due to server movement. They work hard to get everything online again

MariosX there are plenty of helpful posts it that thread on psx-scene (some of which from me) which you should read through, tonnes of people used that method so that's the best place to look for help.

Yes that's the tutorial I used.
Already browsing through their posts.
All I see are unrelated to my problems...

Still the old way with lv2patcher ....

Here is the glevand guide to create the ps3dd partition on internal and install petitboot.
http://www.gitbrew.org/~glevand/ps3/...OTHEROS_ON_HDD
all tools: http://www.gitbrew.org/~glevand/ps3/
(glevand link is online )

The way to create the GPT partitions can be found on this site also, no time to look for a link

Thanks a lot for this link.
1) Is this the best method to install Linux?
2) Would it be better if I installed Red Ribbon instead of Ubuntu? (I care for perfomance issues)
3) He says: Install my latest CFW and also "GameOS should use only the half of your HDD" can't I keep Rebug OS and use only 22Gb for Linux?

1. Yes, Gitbrew's install to HDD is best, the other method is outdated now.
2. You're best off running Red Ribbon for your first time imo, runs really smooth for me. (Otherwise I used Ubuntu with LXDE)
3. You can use any otherOS++ CFW, but Gitbrew have a nice selection of FW's to choose how much room you want to give OtherOS vs GameOS. If you want gaming compatability, use one that does NOT have SS patches (where they say trophy errors) or stick with Rebug since it'll have a 22GB partition too and use Gitbrew's tute and pkg's etc.

Otherwise from the Gitbrew selection "CFW355-OTHEROS++-22GB.PUP" is what you'd want, it'll give OtherOS a 22GB partition.

If you're just curious about what Linux is like on PS3, installing to USB is a handy way to try it (when it works right :P) although installing to internal HDD is best if you don't mind formatting it first.

One more question
Which is the best firmware for: Back Managers, Homebrew and Other OS?
I have found many such as: kmeaw, rebug, waninkolo and the more I find the more it drives me crazy/confused.

Also is there any way to start Linux directly from XMB?

If you want to take full advantage of Glevand his excellent tools the original gitbrew CFW is best.
If you like all kind of extra debug options with GameOS in combination with Linux: Rebug with OtherOS++
If you like to keep it simple: kmeaw with OtherOS++

Note: Like Mistawes wrote, you can get trophy errors if some kind of ss service is enabled in the CFW. For kmeaw this option needs to be disabled, you have to rebuild it with ps3mfw.

Best is Rebug imho, you can't use some glevand tools but these tools are only for real devs, you can even kill GameOS with them so for normal users they aren't needed.

No way to start Linux from XMB. The recovery button sequence isn't that hard, takes only a few seconds

Edit:

1. parted /dev/ps3dd
2. mklabel gpt
3. mkpart primary 0 2GB
4. print
5. mkpart primary 2GB (the rest of the hard drive here.)
6. quit.
(this is how you partition ps3dd, for point 5 take a look at the print output. Most likely it is 23.6Gb/ I.e. mkpart primary 2GB 23.6GB)

And what is SS?
How do I know that I have trophy errors?
Also off-topic. Currently I'm using Rebug OS 3.55.2 with Update 4 on their website they say that if I use Update 4, Spoof files are getting updated too to 3.72 but when I'm going to System Update via Internet it finds 3.72 update is available and suggest me to update.
I thought that spoof files are used to fake firmware's version in order not to get any messages regarding new firmware updates, am I wrong?
