Don't throw it away! Wow, I didn't say that.
Keep it and work on it in your spare time.
In the meantime enjoy your Games, PSN, DLC and regular updates without serious risk of YLOD again.
If you can afford it one system for hacking, learning, experimenting and the another for official play is worth it.

You didn't say to throw it away, but you did say that it was only worth fixing to get your data back...so logically, if you don't care about your saves, that would be saying not to fix it at all.

As for a new system, there is still a very serious risk of YLOD...sony slows the fan speeds through firmware updates as soon as models get out of warranty, so a new system is really not a permanent YLOD fix. As I mentioned before, my YLOD-repaired fat has lasted longer than a slim bought long after the YLOD repair.

No. Not logical. You have made an assumption and omitted provided information.
A PS3 data transfer transfers EVERYTHING including in my experience encrypted saves.
Although I do recommend saving them to the PSN cloud if you can.
I do have and offered in this thread Exact instructions on how to successfully perform a PS3 to PS3 data transfer.

Your exaggerating the YLOD risk and your FAT success but I can agree that it is still risk.
I think those risks can be mitigated by doubling down so to speak on two systems.
The best of both worlds if you have the cash.
Gaming is an expensive hobby especially PC gaming.
At least its not as bad the 360 failure rates used to be.
BTW: Every other console I have purchased before this generation still works.

That is saying a lot...I went through 4 PS2s, with multiple laser replacements in each...my second fat must have died about a dozen times before it got a terminal mainboard problem. All the other systems I had over the years were rock-solid (with the exception of the game sockets that would always wear out).

Gaming is an expensive hobby...if you are on PC or if you replace your system every time one part fails. But if you use a console, repair your system yourself, and wait until games hit the $20-$30 rack, you can cut the costs significantly.

The PSN cloud isn't free...and isn't available to CFW users...but then CFW users don't have to worry about copy-protected saves.

The launch 360s were the most unreliable systems I have ever seen, with the possible exception of those $300 Dell PCs. That doesn't make PS3s reliable...none of the fats are very reliable from what I have seen, and the slims are already failing...the same problems that caused YLODs on the launch models still exist on the slims, and probably still exist on the new slim models as well. There is really no reason why electronics shouldn't last well into obsolescence...and with a PS3, you are lucky if it lasts half the console lifespan.

Fracking Ouch! that would really piss me off.
The little PS2 I have has been so abused and it just keeps on going.

True and it should be.
PSN Plus is a little too pricey to justify but I think its on par with a monthly XBLN script.
There are some big savings with PSN Plus, but if you dont have the cash to spend there is nothing to save.
I really like the PSN network and dont mind paying for the little arcade games I love so much.

I agree.
I get this feeling as well.
Seems like both Sony and Microsoft purposely abused their customers this time around.
My "launch spiderman edition" fat lasted almost 3 years even though I left it on all the time.
And then the 3.61? FW made the fan run a lot slower.
I knew it was going to burn up because it already ran hot.
After it died I fixed it up using a heater to reflow, it lasted long enough to transfer everything.
If done correctly its not even necessary to login to PSN again to reactive or download any content.
One of these days I will have to break it out and try to fix it for real.
Its a prime target for a progskeet project.
I know you like to mod hardware... me too.

The really annoying part is that the PS3 hardware isn't all that bad...the original 360's failed due to poor component choices and quality...the PS3 fails due to firmware designed to make the system fail. If sony wanted to cut YLODs down to about 1/10 or less, they could do so with a 500KB firmware patch.

i couldn't understand very well... when you turn it on, it's just the game that won't boot? or the xmb too? also, what FW are you on? have you ever had overheating problems?

this might be an rsx failure... Check on the net for green light of death and it's simptoms, just to be sure it's that. If that is what you have got, reflowing might solve your problem. if the simptoms do not match with glod, i don't know what to do...

also, check the air on the back to know if it's hot. cool air means heat is not being transferred
