On PS3 with games that have an SFO that state its a disc game, once you press the Eject button PS3 will exit to XMB. Also PS3 disks come with an extra encryption layer over the disks, so if the encryption layer that is getting checked all the time and if it doesnt fit with the one of the disk you booted after a couple of seconds PS3 will stop reading the disc.
Swap Magic is history, all consoles after XBOX 360, PS3, Wii have found 2 ways that are simply make them harder to produce disks for their consoles but at the same time blocks completely the idea of bootable disks. 1st is the reason I said above but even before that, they don't have the authorization formula to authorize disks to work on consoles without recognising them as non-original disc.

Second I wanted to ask:
If you have an opened PS3 tray (and you don't have an original copy of Swap Magic) why don't you try swap a game with Swap Magic (3.8 or 3.6 I think is the ones that allowed uLaunchElf on PS3) then use uLaunchElf then boot Open PS2 Loader and boot a game from USB? My cousin is still using this on his CECHA console and it works perfectly, even games that didnt work normally worked that way...
I think i understand what you are asking. But i only have some originals, and many backups.. you may be right, but i don't know how open ps2 loader works, never used it. If it really works, that would be a way for most of users not needed to open the drive to play backups, just playing on USB.. Good point.

Today i can't test it, but tomorrow i can give it a try. Will also can my friend if i can also test it on his slim with 3.72 in case you also been curious.

Thanks.

OK here's what you should do.

1. Grab a -good- iso of Swap Magic 3.8 and burn it on a disc (CD or DVD depending on the original game you will use for the trick).
2. Follow the instructions of how you can launch uLaunchElf on Swap Magic, it's easy but I dont remember it exactly it's like 2 steps or something.
3. Grab a USB stick or HDD that has a capacity that can handle the ISO of the game you want to play. It must be empty or remember to backup your files from inside.
4. Download USB Advance tools to format your USB stick/HDD. You NEED that tool to format it. Then use the tool that instals the ISO file on the USB Stick/HDD. It will take looong, the process is really slow but whatever...
5. Once it's DONE (remember it must be done with step 4 and after do that step not at the same time or before) download the latest version of Open PS2 Loader and place the file on the root of you USB Device/Drive.
6. Use Swap Magic trick and after launch UlaunchElf. From uLaunchElf you go File Browser -> mass: -> and launch the ELF file with the open PS2 loader.
7. Once it boots the first time I think the game wont show up automatically so you have to go to settings and put the USB Loading to Automatic or Enabled or something... Once you done that, your game ISO will appear on screen. Just press X and launch it. (Note that PS2 had 1.1 USB profile so some games may pause and continue on cutscenes or it will take longer to load, so don;t get panicked or reset your console before you wait a nice amount of time)

I know it sounds long but believe me it's way too easy, the most tricky part is the installation of the ISO games on USB which is also the longest part because it takes ridiculusly long to process (Kingdom Hearts 1 took me like 1:30 hour).
If you have any other question, even if you think its silly, feel free to ask me.

Also, if I remember correctly, Open PS2 Loader allows you to use Virtual Memory Cards (not the ones on the PS3) to save your game on USB.
I think it's exactly the same thing Sony did with PS2 Classics to tackle the issue that the full software emulator had.

No it cannot. deank added experimental support at one point (was in one of the first few builds, which did not work). I think he might've added the ability to rip PS2 games but that's not the same as playing them. So, for now only Cobra can play PS2 backups unless someone can successfully report a backup (burnt to a DVD, not mounted) from this method working.

Tried this today on a 3.55 UK 40GB Phat model.

Got into service mode fine. Placed in several original PS2 games each gave the same error

It does look like it tries to boot but I get a purple screen and then this error.

"This title is not currently compatible with the PS3 system....etc"

Tried MGS 2, GTA:Vice City, Final Fantasy X and Soul Reaver 2.

So unless there's some more insight into this many of us are out of luck...oh well good try.

There has to be a easier way ,the ps3 has 2 folders that say PSP EMU + PS2 EMU in i think dev_Flash or vsh or module folder somewhere there is self files in all the PS1,PS2 PS3 emus folders on PS3 already. + How about the PS2 format software you can download from ps store ?

Does anyone even know that exists ? Looks on PS store & search PS2 you will find ps2 format, data/software you can download. I think you can format your PS3s hard drive with it & run only PS2 games. Maybe that can help devs 2 understand how to run ps2 games on the ps3 with the format software from PS store ? That would be awesome PS1+PS2+PS3+BLU RAY+multiMAN Backups
I think all PS3s can play PS2 games we just don't know it yet. Mabey you can get it from main site also ..

i finally tested it on PS3 Phat 40GB and IT DIDN't WORK.

I got a Message saying my Ps3 Model is not compatible to Ps2 Games.
The System itself recognized the Playstation2 Game.

EDIT: I have CFW Kmeaw 3.55

No offence but, don't make me repeat it.
PS2 Classics DO NOT use ps2_emu files from dev_flash.
Firmware 3.55 DO NOT recognize the data type of PS2 classics and you CANNOT fix that in any way. It's a feature added secretly/silently on firmwares after 3.55.
