hmmm....didn't you just say you got it to run? not Hello world, but the elfloader, so why would you be asking about reformating an external hardrive ala ps2.

I see what your saying, its a good idea.
To replace a swapmagic file with your own with the same code to run a separate program.
I have been doing this with files on my PC. (not writing code but replacing)

I´m a little confused at what your getting at. Yes, you can load ps2 homebrew off a usb device with swapmagic. Not all of it works because of differences in the ps3. Usbadvance loads up but thats it. it´s not because you have to format the drive. read the link to the post bigman11 put. it explains about usbadvance.
here´s what does work so far.

If you have a US or JPN PS3 and you have an original copy of Final Fantasy XI, you could install it to the ps3 HD. You could then try ps2 programs which access the HD and see if you have any luck.
As for taking this further, it would be up to ps2 coders to write ps2 homebrew for the ps3.
I would still like to see emulators like Mame,Scummvm,NES,SegaMS and others working through usb on the ps3. we are limited to what the ps2 would be capable of running.

You can´t run ps2 elfs in ps3 mode and you can´t run any elfs, except ps2 elfs in ps2mode.
I´m not sure if thats what you meant by a helloworld elf.
