Not a problem. What do you mean other people tell me to format my HDD to exit and update loop? Does that mean last owner did something fishy?

8002F281 can often be fixed by using the same method you would use to downgrade OFW 3.55 to OFW 3.41 ... all you need is a Teensy (or some other downgrade USB device) and a flash drive...and the files for the flash drive.

Ok, well that's good news. How does it work? Can I presume the OFW files can be downloaded somwhere? Sorry but I'm completely new in this scene...

no it didn't keep updating by itself... if you have a broken component ( like a faulty BD drive) the updates will fail to complete resulting into an update loop...
i read your signature, and that's not true : ) the main reason ylod shows up is thermal compond grease drying up ^^

Correct. But what causes thermal paste to dry up? Heat. (Edit: And bad quality thermal paste obviously) Which is caused by a too hot power supply.

Ever wondered why Sony replaced the power supply with a cooler one and replaced the fan with a less good one (less blades thus being quieter)?

that's maybe true for the first BC models, but what about now? even latter 80GB fat models have YLOD, and now slims start to show heating simptoms too... i believe PSU is just a part of the problem, not it's main cause

Good point! I never knew the Slims even had YLoD symptoms... Must have something to do with the FW making the fan not work hard enough too. Since the slims are exceptionally quiet?
