hi to all im new to this ps3 hacking i have 2 flashed xbox 360's and i have been offered a 40gb ps3 with a drive that wont read discs anymore but everything else works fine for £20 can i put custom firmware on here and play downloaded games from an external hard drive or do i need the drive to be working please help as i would love to get this ps3 working for my 2 lads

For £20 it is a great price...if you want to jailbreak, you will probably want to upgrade the HDD tho. Some games don't need disks at all, others will need disks. You can get a whole new drive (or fix the existing one) reasonably cheap.

could i connect my 1tb external hard drive to it and put downloaded ps3 games on it and play like that once i have put CFW onto it

If you are running without a working bluray drive you already have a very limited selection of games...the selection of games that run from an external is even smaller.

I think that the price is really good...but I am thinking from the standpoint of fixing the drive...if you don't intend to do that, then the system is practically useless.

Best checking what firmware the PS3 is on before buying too so you know exactly how you will go about getting CFW installed.

firmware is currently 3.66 does this make a difference

uh... have you even looked at the banner on top of the page? : ) highest hackable FW atm is 3.55... so you will have to do a downgrade, but you need some hardware flasher like E3, ProgSkeet or a teensy ++
