I've become a big fan of LGs...the picture quality starts great and stays that way, the cases are well made, and the features work the way they are designed to. Stay away from Sony, Asus, Acer, and Vizio...they are all junk inside...and if one appears to have a good picture, it is a fluke resulting from a failed part.

Best advice: go to some retail store and look around. Find one that has a nice picture quality and layout, and (if you can) make sure that there is room for the connectors to go in without bending. Make sure that the stand is sturdy enough that it isn't going to fall over if someone slams the door, and of course you don't want a unit with a visually unappealing case. Also, consider getting one with VESA mount support...even if you don't want it now, you never know what you will want to do in the future.

As for ordering, you can often get a TV slightly cheaper online. If the savings is large (even after shipping), then this is a good option. If the saving is relatively small, I would recommend the local store. Even the best brands sometimes get those green vertical lines or dead pixels within the first few weeks...and it is preferable to be able to drive it back to the store and exchange it rather than doing an online exchange. Even with a company like Amazon that has an unbelievable return/replacement policy, the turnaround time is still a few days.

[edit]
When you are at the store, play with the on-screen menus...this is often overlooked, but can be a real PITA on some models.

Layaway is back huh? Do you know if that's nation wide? BTW do you guys suppose its safe to buy a 3d tv now? By safe I mean that the technology has been out long enough that it isn't as buggy as in when it is first released and most of the time not completely developed?

why, cause you don't have 3d tv or for some other reason, I ask because i can't view 3d for other reason no matter what kind of tv I get or at the picture show for that matter.
