Hello (first post in three years)

I bought a CECHE01 that had a "defective" bluray (board seems okay). It was running 3.15 and I was afraid to get stuck in an update loop by upgrading to 3.55, so I used PS3MFW and made bluray-less firmwares for OFW355 and CFW355. I had to spoof the CFW and make it appear as a 3.65 to make it install, as while in recovery mode, my ps3 would keep "Checking..." for update files forever and never find anything (I had to update from the XMB).

The update process went well but I couldn't run anything I had installed (no backup manager, hermes, etc.), as I would always get a black screen when trying to run anything at all. I tried the lv2 fixes that float around the web -- didn't work.

After messing up with it a little (formatting the drive is one thing I remember having done), it stopped going to the XMB (black screen on boot).

I can still access recovery mode, but attempts to format end up in a black screen, attempts to fix the file system give me an error message, and system updates are downright impossible because of the never ending "Checking" message.

I tried using different hard drives, formatting them in FAT32 using a computer, using different USB sticks, putting/removing the drive from the PS3 to see if it would make a difference, swapping blu-ray drives (I have another KEM400aaa lying around) and also swapping their boards, to no avail.

I am out of ideas right now and in a pinch, as it is a NAND console and therefore cannot be flashed using a teensy/e3/etc device (waiting for NAND adapters)

I won't throw it away because I might eventually need it for parts, but would appreciate any ideas regarding this problem.
