Blu-Ray Diagnosis help

I'm trying to fix up a PS3 with a borked Blu-Ray drive. Trying to diagnose exactly what's wrong with it. The drive will pull in a disc, the blue light will flash, but will not stay lit. Leading me to believe the sensor is not working properly. But that's my less-educated opinion. I've tried restoring the file system and rebuilding the database and have the same results.

So is it a laser assembly I need to replace? A bad sensor? It seems pretty mechanically sound so I don't think it's the motor.

Just looking for any input.

The blue LED activity on your PS3 is normal. It should flash when it is activated, whether it is taking in a disc or ejecting the disc, and should remain off otherwise. Good news is that your blu ray drive is good. Chances are that the laser is out though. No need to rebuild the database or anything. There are a lot of videos on youtube that show you how to replace the laser if need be.

Before investing in anykind of laser you need to find out what model ps3 you have because various models use different lasers. Also check to make sure that it is not a simple matter like the lens being dirty. Oh and if you need to take it apart don't mess with the gears. I did this and now have a working lens but I have to force the disc in.

Looks like I fixed it actually. It was a problem with the physical mechanisms of the drive. The arm along the left hand side was pushed too far forward, and also the metal "V" shaped arm along the bottom had a peg that kept sliding out when trying to push it forward. I took it off, gave it a slight bend so that it would make better contact with the socket in the arm, and pushed the arm back into place. Works like a charm now. Laser seems fine.

Thanks for the input!
