Piracy may be up, but publishers are making less effort to protect their products.

Digital delivery saves them money at the cost of easy access to the same content for pirates
For ps3, relying on the eboot alone to allow the game to run is fail.

If they implimented a serial system based on a unique per-disc ID combined with unique console serial/user ID to allow the game to run would slow down piracy and make it harder than the simple download/play that is around at the moment.

I'm sorry publishers/developers but if you go to a crack house and leave your stash on the table, its going to go walkies. Its the same with your digital content.

Game developers/publishers drive console sales so if they want piracy free, they need to demand security using custom propriety media or file system etc.

Now I'm not saying my **** doesn't stink as far as this goes but if it was too much effort to get a pirate game to run, many would throw in the towel and fork out the cash.

Piracy may be bad, but if you put a temptation in front of someone, don't expect them not to take advantage of it

Not if done correctly.

Unique per disc ID combined with psn ID and console ID processed by the publisher to give you your unique serial based on these factors would be effective at "slowing it down" like I previously said.

Of course on PC, keygens are readily available but consoles are a different matter.

Nothing will STOP piracy, but slowing it down is better than nothing.
The publishers are as much to blame as those who do it, that's all I was getting at

Actually, that would just serve to piss people off and increase the popularity of piracy; they have tried that before. It is bad on PC, it would be terrible on a console...games locked to one console, to one account, plus you have to enter some long code using a ps3 controller? That will slow sales, but it won't slow piracy.

You don't cut down on piracy by making things hard on your paying customers or by attacking the used market. The first cuts your customers right away, the second cuts customers later when they have less money from selling used games to buy new games. As for people who buy used games, they don't care about developers, and would just pirate games if used games were not available (PC is proof of this).

Pirates are not killing the industry WE ARE! with our second hand purchases and bargain shopping. not buying retail kills the industry more than pirating. ( it's late here im sure you get what i mean. Night.)
