PS3 power supply fix
While playing a game my PS3 shut off and would not turn back on until
the power switch in back was toggled, and when I pressed the power button the power LED would turn green for a split second and the PS3 would beep but then turn back off no beep/blink code and again would not turn back on until the power switch was toggled. turned out to be a bad power supply, with the help of a multi-meter and a soldering iron I fixed it. I took a few pictures during the process, maybe they will help someone else. first album is testing the PS3 with an ATX power supply http://s1184.photobucket.com/albums/...%20ATX%20test/ the second album is the part replacement and final test. http://s1184.photobucket.com/albums/...upply%20fixed/ link to the replacement part http://search.digikey.com/scripts/Dk...=497-5972-5-ND power supply's are fairly easy to fix, the parts tend to fail as open or short circuits, the part that failed in mine was a short circuit across all 3 leads and was responsible for driving the step down transformer for the +12 volt supply. here is a youtube video on how to test transistor YouTube - ‪How to test a transistor‬‏ the transistor that failed in my PS3 power supply would conduct electricity in any direction on any lead. CAUTION!! there are voltages greater than 200 volts in these circuits. make sure the supply is unplugged and left to sit for 30 min . Last edited by untermensch; 07-04-2011 at 09:17 PM. |

Very helpful, if you made a noob friendly tutorial (with your specific PSU) I could move this to front page

Thanks for the information. I might need it some day. I was wondering though when it shut off automatically was it in standby mode? Meaning was the red light on or was there just no power at all until you flipped the switch in the back? What causes shorts like these? I once had a laptop that had a problem with the power supply. The battery and the power cord were also shot. Do you think I did the right thing by just tossing it? I payed 400 for it used and it was a Compaq RXXXX (can't remember the model #).

Great post!
I thought I had a blown power supply in a YLOD I got, turned out to be a loose connection to the power/eject buttons, phew!

circuit and would get triggered because of the bad transistor. I think in this case there was a manufacturing defect in the transistor that caused it to fail. ************* [ - Post Merged - ] ************* youtube videos on soldering and mulit-meter use. ************* [ - Post Merged - ] ************* supply is unplugged, if you short circuit a capacitor at the very least it will scare the crap out of you with a loud pop and a flash. it is standard practice to include bleeder resistors in the design that will slowly drain the stored power so after a few hours their is not a lot of power left in the power supply. power supply's like in the PS3 work by trading voltage for amps and the +12v is capable of delivering 33 amps so somewhere in the power supply there is 200-250 volts at 1.5 - 2 amps that is needed to drive the +12v rail so never open a power supply that is plugged in. |

This could be made into a nice guide...right now it is more of a log; not very useful to anyone who wouldn't already know how to do it.
As for caps, I've always used large resistors to bleed the power out of the caps...even after 30 minutes of sitting, it is still a good idea just in case. |
