Just a quick FYI...while I have not tested the default fan setting/temperature ratios on this slim yet, it seems that the theoretical cooling system capability is better overall. With the fan at max speed, neither the CELL nor the RSX have gone over 51C even after hours of gaming...on my old 40GB fat with the fan at max speed, I got over 60C in some games. Plus the fan is a lot quieter at max speed.

Again, I have not tested the default fan settings yet...the system might default to the same temperatures, but the cooling system is more capable in spite of being smaller and quieter (although the smaller micron CELL might have something to do with it).

[update]
It appears that this system won't be repairable since the TEC I was using to cool the CELL failed on me and the CELL cannot be replaced. I'm not giving Sony any more money, nor am I going to do it by proxy (buying a used PS3 that would then be unavailable to someone else who would then have to buy a new one). Thus, this project will not be completed, nor will the early (unstable) alphas be released because they really are of no use to anyone. I might transfer the bits to a 360...just to draw some attention away from Sony.

What about looking for a broken motherboard of the same model (that has good NOR, Syscon and CPU) and transplant those?
(If you have a flasher, you could also skip transplanting the NOR and instead flash the NOR from the broken mobo with a dump of the one you're getting the CPU and syscon from)

That might be an option, although it would cost almost as much as buying a used PS3.

Probably, but since you don't want to give your money to Sony or force someone else to give their money to Sony, if you still want to repair it I guess it's the only option :P
