Post Requesting Help/Advice/Learning Material: -Ps2 MODCHIPING Project-

AUSTRALIA
The Story
My friend has access to many ps2's and he would like to really love to learn to mod them all perfectly. He has been trying for a long time to find the right information, guide's, chips etc and has now come to a complete halt on his learning pathway and really needs help.
He thought to himself though, why not learn it down to the last component. If he could do that then he would be able to do so much more than just modding.. he could construct, integrate, develop and support the big picture.
But where to start? It seems impossible alone as as he has wasted to much time carrying this burden. He now has a baby boy on the way and much too many more responsibilities too handle now to mess around, 7 months to go to live his dream to the fullest and really get things running.
Yes it is silly, but he has wanted this ever since he was young and it is his passion, so he does not care.

The First step to his Dream
Modding a PS2 Perfectly
* Running Backed up Discs of any region AU/EU/US
* Matching the Boot time or coming close to Original Disc's
* Automatic Booting Identical to the Original's

Questions/Request's for now
Which are the best material's, hardware to use?
- Soldering Iron>
- Tools for Precision>
- Soldering methods>
- Modchip cabable of complete automation>

Which Version/Model should be easy to begin with or should he use?
Does anyone have any nice guide's they'd like to share with him?
Modding, Hacking, Firmware changing, Soldering, Burning etc?:

Thankyou for your time, Help and Kindness.
Hopefully this shall help others too in the long run

No soldering needed : http://freemcboot.info/

Also, if it's a phat model, look at getting the network adapter to get the best out of it (I recently picked one up locally for €8).

Getting an initial FMCB is the hard part, I found 007 Agent Under Fire and made a rip which I edited, then burned to disk. I then hotswapped the legit disk for the burned one, then launch the FMCB installer. You can find out how to swap disks by searching, this is a template to make a tool for phat models or there are switches to block on a slim.

FreeMcBoot doesnt work on 9004 models which are releasing from last 2 years.
So modchip is the only way to go.
Install Matrix Infinity(very cheap) n u will also be able to play backups with USB HDD

No need to make a tool, you can simply pull the case apart, pull the top off the disc drive, and hot swap that way. A lot easier, and quicker to do then taking the time to make a tool to open the tray/etc...

Here are the methods I have learned over the years.
1) swap magic.
2) PS1 game elf exploit.
3) modchip.
4) freemcboot.
5) MEMOR 32 with Memento firmware.
6) HD Loader.
7) USB extreme.
8) swap trick (no swap magic).
9) Action replay Max/Action replay Max EVO elf exploit.
10) modified 007 elf exploit.

The ones listed are the ones I have tried (except 5). The ones that I would describe as being perfect would be options 3,4,5 if works as they are straight forward. The next bunch you still have to do a couple things before playing but they are not hard to do are options 2,6,7,9,10. The rest are to me unsatisfactory and I considered them to me annoying if anything lol.

sounds like you are trying to reinvent the wheel.

FMCB is the answer for PS2 before datecode 8c, for 8c and after then you will need either a mod chip OR get a copy of swapmagic. with this it is the simplest thing to boot into uLE . once there you can start any homebrew you want.
