Only the CELL and RSX will trigger a heat shut down; the southbridge and memory are not monitored.

This does not sound like an overheating issue, more like a software or HDD issue. First thing I would do is swap the HDD from a spare, say out of your other PS3 that is known working and see if it helps.
Also, you say the system update froze on 9%, at that point in the update process it is still unpacking the the update and copying to the HDD, so if it fails that early it also points to a HDD problem. |

You cant use the console without a HDD, it just brings up an error saying there is no HDD detected, so that's not really testing it....swapping out with a known working drive is a true test.

If it still turns itself off after a minute or so, you can be reasonably sure that the HDD isn't the (only) problem.

You are right killerbug, they won't warranty it because it may have gotten shipped from outside of the USA. It is not even 3 months old! So Samsung will not stand behind their products. Well I guess now I will never buy Samsung or Sony

LoL...a foreign company who makes products overseas won't warranty anything that was made overseas! Samsung is good about some products; they have lots of different divisions. The hard disk division should be avoided.

the whole external hdd is new to me but since my recent experience with my 1Tb hdd I am afraid to get another due to the fact that it is still new technology and obviously they haven't got it down yet. So I am leaning towards a external hdd. Curious if anyone knows if the western digital 2Tb mypassports work well. also had a question on the file splitting process. I get that you split the files into 4G sections on the hard drive. My question is does multiman put them together automatically or do i need to manually put them together?

As for the WD external drives, just stay away from the big ones...the little ones work well but the big ones overheat. |
