you need to format your PS3 before upgrading if you dont wanna get banned on PSN no need to format actually need to delete all things realted to jailbreak and install OFW

because the psn games are signed with 3.55 keys so 3.55 ofw thinks they are psn game are real offical ones , as soon as u go 4.0 they wont work as the 3,55 keys are blocked on that fw

Sony never banned me when we had CFW, I doubt they would ban you now. Also "just deleting" does not permanently remove the data. If sony wanted to, they can see what you have on your HDD. A full format would overwrite all data and make it almost impossible for sony to see. Either way, if you really want to update, delete everything you do not need, managers, homebrew games, etc. They will just bog down your PS3's HDD. No need to format.

I wasnt banned when I updated. Synced trophies from games that were not officially available to play on 3.55 and I didn't remove my homebrew. I'm carving up on PSN as we speak. I updated about a month ago.

no i know a couple of people who just went to ofw after delteing all things cfw related, if you dont do this before hand youll have to do a format as youll have no way to access the files to remove them on ofw4.0. the people i know didnt want to format as then they would lose saves and also have to re-download all there real psn games

just make sure to remove things like game backups and roms. my brother delted these then updated to ofw then delted mutilman and all his homebrew and wasnt banned, so youll be ok but if your so afraid then do a format to keep your mind at ease. though its not completely needed

I haven't formatted and i've been playing online for like 3 months on PSN!!!!!

What do i have to backup (or what does sony allow me to backup) before formatting my PS3?

I have around 9 games (backup), 5 emulators, 3 DLC (pirated so they no longer work), multiman, CEX-DEX and all my installed game data.
