PS3 Woes.....had to give in & reformat
Hi to all,
Put cfw Kmeaw 3.55 on my son's PS3. Worked a treat for the last year, with multiman in its ever-changing incarnations, with a 640GB hard drive replacement. Just tried to play a game & it came out of multiman with a corrupt data on the disc icon. I looked at the system settings & it said Firmware 3.55, don't know if it should have said Kmeaw 3.55 or not? Read up about it & was advised to go into recovery & do an option 3 Ps3 file system restore. The process doesn't actually finish, stating that it has to format the drive yes/no? Obviously if I do format, I lose my son's many hours of GT5 save. This will have an extremely detrimental affect on the mood of the whole house! Is there any other way round this problem? Most Google solutions haven't worked, or they're kids saying ..."like....switch it on & off & it'll be fine ...like!" At switch-on, the PS3 gives the wrong hard disc message & only gives me the option to restore/format. Took out the drive, "blew the contacts" as some advised (!)...Hooked the drive up to PC, but reading up tells me the PS3 file system in encrypted & unreadable. Does anybody have any tips or is it the inevitable format? Thank you very much! Last edited by beavissdad; 12-08-2011 at 09:47 PM. |

forget the pc, you wont accomplish anything like that as far as the hdd is concerned.
restore filesystem should not format hdd restore ps3 system will do reinstalling kmeaw may fix the issue too and shouldnt format if its the only game with the error, try deleting game data from the "game data utility" on the xmb or there may be a problem with the actual game

PS3 Woes.....had to give in & reformat
Many thanks for your reply japsander.
I have no access to the XMB at all. The system boots, immediately tells me wrong hard disk, restore yes/no, cannot restore, format yes/no.... I can still get to restore menu with the multiple power button presses, but same result.... Re-installed kmeaw from restore menu, but still unable to restore files......no access to XMB. Okay, I figure there's no other viable options, so restored system to original ![]() Thanks for your help japsander Last edited by beavissdad; 12-08-2011 at 09:46 PM. |

I may be a couple hours late, but for future reference, you can always copy the save data to an external storage device (i.e. USB flash drive or ext hdd) and then flash rebug to the system. Game compatibility would remain the same, and by using the "Fake Save Data" option, you can use save data from other PS3 consoles, including your own from a different firmware flash, as long as you update to the same game data update. Bit of a mouthful, and far simpler to actually do, but it'd have saved your save game data and allowed you to reflash the system AND go through a format without screwing yourself. Sorry I wasn't here sooner, but as I stated, next time you'll know. =\

Tell your son to suck it up it's just a video game. I would be more worried about my hard drive than a silly game save. It could be your hard drive just failed on its own but make sure he knows how to power off the ps3 correctly. If you tried everything and nothing worked format and see what happens. Too bad you're going to have to download a bunch of games again...

Second that! Maybe your son can join us since you lost his game data. He won't be screaming and moaning when he's smokin' a blunt.
(sorry, bad joke)

Haha cool comments guys.
He always shuts the PS3 down properly & if I'd invested as much time in a game as he did, I'd be pretty p*ssed.... Hard drive seems okay now though after format! Thanks for your helpful words, kipabc123. You live & learn by experiences like this. In future I might just store as many games as I can on the external drive, then if things go pear-shaped at least its a windows compatible file system that disc error-checking or a file-recovery program can restore the files, unlike the internal drive with unreadable proprietary PS3 file system. Appreciate everyone's interest! |
