Cold is mental - Is anything else?
Could it be true? A couple of days ago, I received a text message from a friend of mine. In that text he had told me that cold is mental and along with that he tells me a story. There was a guy who walked into a walk in freezer. To that poor guy's surprise, the door mysteriously shut closed and didn't open. The guy, not knowing the freezer was broken (not working or something), began writing letters to family members and friends. Those messages quickly came to an end with the phrase "I cannot write anymore as my fingers are starting to freeze." (Not word for word...) The following day, workers arrived at the scene only to discover a dead body in a freezer. It was proven that the freezer wasn't working or it was shut off and the temperature never dropped below 50 degrees. The guy pretty much imagined him dying and apparently, it came to be a reality. Now, something that has caught my attention is, if cold is mental, what else is? I guarantee that 90% of people reading this is no idiot and knows that your brain tells you what to do, what to think about, and it also sends your body emotions. Since that guy thought that he was at a point in which his bones were starting to freeze, why can't anything else be mental? I mean, pain could be mental, the warm temperature could be mental, and etc. If pain is mental, you could do almost anything that is not fatal and feel no pain. The only reason we feel pain is because we have been taught that pain is real and exists. We do not bite off our fingers because our brain tells us not to. If we could somehow make the brain think the opposite, we would be able to feel no pain. What do you guys think? Article: http://www.snopes.com/horrors/gruesome/freezer.asp

I'm sitting in my shed at my computer as I write this, the temperatures for where I am are:
Temperature 0 °C Humidity 93% Feels Like -6 °C I'll tell you a fact, it's not just in my head! My hands turning purple isn't something I'm imagining (this weed ain't THAT good lol).. If that's how your friend strikes up a conversation, find a new one!

Assuming that this is fact, what makes me uneasy about this story is the lack of background on the individual. How do we know that he wasn't sick prior to the incident? How do we know that he wasnt withdrawing from a lack of medication and so his normal temp went lower than usual (this happens in a lot of withdrawal states) and the 50 degree temp for an entire day was all that was needed for him to pass away? How old was he? If my grandpa was placed in the same situation he would certainly die.
I am not trying to denounce the power of the brain, but I think there is always a physical explanation to the cognitive aspect of neurology. I have read countless articles where people can get rid of their headaches on command or with placebo drugs, Drs treating diseases with placebos, munks lighting themselves on fire and not showing signs of pain and I believe it. But I think that these individuals are capable of manipulating their biophysiological response to a given stimuli (for headaches and fire a massive upregulation in endogenous opiods) which does involve the use of cognition but not solely cognition. Why doesnt this work on everyone? because everyone has biological differences (receptor densities, differences in substrate production). What if this monk had severe sensitivity to opioids on account of having an upregulated transcription of opiod receptors and so when the body was set afire he had a nomal opiod release but a sensitized reaction? My point is that there is bound to be underlying physical factors. In this case I think the individual may have had some underlying problem with his temp initially. Perhaps we was prescribed xanax for stress and he was withdrawing leaving him increasingly vulnerable to cold temperatures all the while releasing adensosine and all the other self destroying biological compounds that occompany high stress which ultimately killed him. The story is simply too vague but it is interesting. Thanks for the post.

I definitely believe in mind over matter, but we're both physical and mental, and our physical selves can only tolerate so much extreme cold or heat before our organic elements begin to die.
That being said, who knows what happens after we (our bodies) die? Does our thought and spirit live on through some other means? In that strange sense, I look forward to death, just to see what lies beyond; but I'm in no rush to find out as there's much more to learn in this life.
