PS3 won't take power in, lost standby and power up--what to do?
Hi,
My PS3 won't go into standby anymore so there is no standby light when the power cable is connected into a power source, and the console also won't power up. No light, and nothing happens when POWER UP or EJECT are pressed. Before the ability to take electricity in(?) got lost, I had my PS3 opened up and 1) I used pliers to open the internal harddrive cage a tad, and 2) I put styrofoam on the chip that E3 FLASHER clip connects on(to apply pressure to the clip from the metal cage over it) and used tape on the clip/styrofoam. Then I put the motherboard back. Now my PS3 won't go into standby and it won't power up. So something had to happen on hardware level when I was doing my stuff or assemblying the PS3 after that? The question is: what most likely happened? Something got twist on the motherboard? Something perhaps got disconnected? What could it have been? The only virtual way to apply a change of this magnitude on the PS3 was imo when I had applied the styrofoam piece and tape on the chip, and then put the metal cover back on -> There must have been pressure somewhere in a wrong place but where, or is it something else? Help please. What do I do now beside trying to find a flaw on the motherboard. I'm a total noob on electrical components so I probably won't notice anything if it's not so obvious that even a baby would notice--so what will I search for and what should I do? Help please. Yes.
So how do I test the PSU isn't broken? I don't know a thing about electrics. |

first of all why would you put styrofoam in your ps3? styrofoam is a huge static electricity collector. Static electricity will fry any ic chips on the circuit boards. If you fried a chip your ps3 is trash. you should open it back up take out the styrofoam and make sure you reconnect all of the connectors properly. if one connector is not seated correctly the ps3 will not power up.
************* [ - Post Merged - ] ************* be very careful to try to keep yourself grounded, your body also is a static elecricity collector. And it is worse in cold weather conditions. It does not take much to fry a chip. |

If there was a fried chip on my PS3, would I notice such a component easily? They all look fine imo. Will be test tomorrow if PSU lets electricity through. |

was the styrofoam meant for that purpose? If not deffinately take it out. And if you zapped a chip... no, there does not necessarilly need to be physical evidence of damage. and in the case of static almost guaranteed there would be no evidence. Just hope that you left a connector loose and not zapped a chip. Like i said before make sure you are grounded before handling the pcb's!!! very important!!

Made a small mistake: I should have written that there was an E3 clip on the the chip and then tape on the E3 clip, and then the styrofoam. So that styrofoam never had a direct touch to that PS3 chip. There was stuff there in between them. Will be testing PSU soon now. |

curious if you got the ps3 running? And I would still take out the styrofoam, elecrostatic discharge can jump quite a distance.
