Straight off I am an Atheist so I hold no religion higher than another, but I DO find it all interesting and have devoted more than a wee bit of time researching the various 'main' religions.

@ElSalvatore Regaqrdless of which actual 'sect' was in power at the time, it Was Christians who commited the atrocities that have been so nicely labelled 'The Holy Crusades' so don't take offence when someone speaks the truth. If you need to detach yourself from the Catholic faith (sect) then you yourself are going against the tennets of your own religion as does it not state that God created us in 'his image' (basically all religions state that), so ergo, ALL humans were created by your deity and it is not for you or anyone else to say otherwise.

Throughout history, religion has slaughtered more innocent people than any other thing and that is fact. The main problem with religion is not whether or not there exists a deity, but the fact that humanity is garbage to the nth degree when it comes to power and greed and will use any form of belief or persuasion to control and rule.

No religion is clean and I truly believe that if anyone thinks his/her faith is pure then they need a good slap lol

But hey ho, religion is with us and will be until we either evolve emotionally or we destroy ourselves, just do NOT let it control you

I said nothing of the sort, now if i had said that the Israeli IDF murder little babies all in the name of ethnic cleansing, then yes it would have been political.

Good thread, I've seen a lot of these kind of debates go up on various forums and they inevitably lead to name calling and pettiness on the second page so kudos for getting this many pages with relatively little. Hopefully we can keep it going and respect each other and each others opinions.

My thoughts?

I don't believe Abortion to be murder, though I don't think I could ever go through with it myself. I do believe that 1. it is the Womans right to choose and 2. there are many more reasons someone would look to abortion than "Rape" or "couldn't be arsed wearing a condom."

I also believe that religion isn't necessarily a bad thing, nor is it just for the stupid/ignorant/etc it's the acts that get carried out in religions name that are the bad thing.

I was born into a Catholic family, was brought up in a Catholic school but have absolutely no beliefs in any religion, though I am also not atheist (I suppose the word is agnostic) but I have seen first hand how it can help some people going through a tough time, likewise I think we've all seen the results when it is used for evil.

As you said yourself that you are an Atheist, how do you want to know the differences between those religions I mentioned?
It's pretty hard to know about something if you're not really into it! Ant it's even harder when you try to learn something about belief from facts!

And I indeed CAN DETACH MYSELF FROM THE CATHOLIC CHURCH without believing in another God! Wanna know why? Because you can believe in the same God, but practice your religion differently.
Otherwise there wouldn't be a "Catholic Church" and a "Baptist Church" and so on and so on...
