How to blocking FW updates to 3.55 CFW for good?
One of my kids "friends" navigated through the menus to update a perfectly good CFW 3.55 - &%$#*&*!!!!!
So a new PS3 with happy kids again. Is there any way to permanently block FW updates? Right now I have a unit at 3.55. I don’t want the kiddies doing something dumb through an original disc or if they try to enable the wireless connection. Thx. |

I think you can block the wireless connection on your router, though im not 100% sure, though removing the wifi hardware from your PS3 will solve the problem.
You can use a version spoofer to avoid online updating, but i do not think that blocks disc based updates. |

Yes...I've encryted my signal from the router...BUT...I live in a neighbourhood of tiny houses and my next door neighbour's wide open signal can be picked up by the PS3.
Is there a way to permanently block updates through REBUG? |

Only online updates, not disc based, look for Rebug Spoofer on their site.

Make your default gateway for your PS3 0.0.0.0, or any other IP on your LAN, but the router, to avoid online updates.

How to Enable PS3 LAN Access while Blocking Internet WAN Access
If you want to keep your PS3 on your LAN to enable photo, music, and video streaming and you want to keep it off the internet to disable firmware updates, then there are no changes needed on the PS3. Instead log into your router and use the Content Filtering -> Block Services section (for NetGear, may be parental controls or something else in other router brands) to Block PS3 Internet access with the following settings:
Service Type: User Defined Protocol: TCP/UDP Starting Port: 1 Ending Port: 65534 Filter Services For: enter the single IP address of your PS3, or a range of IPs to cover multiple game consoles. Now you just need to save this custom service and set the blocking schedule to "always". This works great. If you ever actually want to manually connect the PS3 to the intrernet, then just log back into your router and change the blocking schedule for this service from "always" to "never". FYI, I also use this same technique for my XBOX 360. Limitation: be sure that your PS3 has a fixed IP address that will never change. You'll want to manually fix the IP address either in your router (Netgear routers let you fix an IP address for its DHCP server by MAC address where you would enter the MAC address of your PS3) or on the PS3 itself. Be sure to fix the IP addresses for the wired and/or wireless interfaces (eg, reserve LAN IP addresses for both MAC addresses in your router if they might both be used). |
