Nope. Just go to the USB device under the Video Menu and press triangle, then "view all" (or similar, forget the wording of it). It will then show you everything on the root (not in a folder) of the USB device.

you can try the following, press triangle and choose "not sure on the option as my ps3 is broke" show all files. This is what I do and always worked when I drag and drop movies onto root of flash-drive. And yes PS3 should be able to play MP4s and depending on the codec of the AVI it should play as well.
PS:Damn cheesethief beat me to the triangle thing...ergh PSS: I hate streaming as I was on wireless and HD would not stream fast enough....Showtime FTW!!! ofcourse must be on CFW....
