Im an experienced hardware tech but a noob when it comes to software &/or hacking. A customer traded in a Backwards compatible PS3 cecha01 with software version 2.42. From what i can tell its never been online or played a modern game. What can / should i do with it / is it worth my time? Normally i would just creep throughout the forums but i figured this was a rare circumstance. I appreciate any input you guys have to offer. Thanks.

Well it depends on what you want to do with it, if you want to in a sense hack it, then install 3.55 CFW and you will be all good. Stay as far away from the update via internet option as you can.
For CFW I would recommend one of the following: Kmeaw 3.55 CFW or Rebug 3.55 CFW I personally use Rebug CFW. Look in the forums for a tutorial by Kamel and that will show step-by-step instruction on hacking the ps3 (would rather say mod it but the word hack was already used so I stuck with it). Here is the tutorial for convenience: http://www.ps3hax.net/showthread.php?t=26677

Kmeaw is seen as the preferred CFW for people who don't need all the extra options available on the Rebug 3.55 CFW. Rebug is like what the name kind of implies, its basically the same from the outside as kmeaw but it also includes options found on debug FW. If you need help looking for the tutorials then don't be afraid to ask.

what do you mean by this post? this scene isnt the best though its still good to have a cfw ps3 for home-brew, some people are pissed at the slow progress but if you have two ps3 then that wont matter really.. cant wait to crimbo to get my new ps3 yehhooo lol
![]() ![]() ![]() PS.. as tizzyt said your best to go to 3.55 kmeaw or rebug, depends what your looking to do with it. as you said other OS then the rebug cfw would probably suit you best mate, good luck with the new ps3 and hope you enjoy it ![]() ![]() ![]()

If otherOS Is what you're focusing on i'd say you should use one of gitbrew's dual boot FWs

Linux give you full access to ps3 hardware, but its' pointless unless you are a developer, coder or someone willing to create hacks. If you use ps3 as gaming console only, kmeaw is best choiche. Once you done you will see the Install package file icon on the xmb, from there you can install all kind of homebrew you find ( backup manager, ftp manager, showtime ecc). As backup manager i suggest you multiman or Rogero manager |

The other OS part isn't important just figured it would be fun to play with. Once its hacked how do i install games to the HD? Oh & i should be doing all this from a windows machine right?
