im sure it's not the heating core it wouldn't produce that gunk inside the cooling system that gunk is oil or either leak stop but i go for oil in this case
my corolla 2008 was leaking coolant in the front passenger side before that there was a steam comin out of vents , and bypassing the heating core fixed the leakage and winters here arent that harsh so yeah i can live without heater >.<

I'm getting the coolant evaluation in an hour or so. I can't stand not knowing.

Just got back from the mechanic and it's worse than I thought. I have a slow leak from the lower intake and a bigger leak (the one that was noticeable) coming from the timing chain cover. Haven't looked into how much work is involved with repairing the timing chain cover but it sounds like alot since pepboys estimated the cost at over 2000 but that would include repairing the intake gasket leak. I'm sure I can get a better price elsewhere but I'm not prepared to put that kind of money into this thing. I put some Bar's copper block seal in and hope it will stop the leak for awhile. I'm thinking all this crap flowing in the system will cause something else to fail. Whoever told me to sell this thing is probably right but I wouldn't feel ok about it unless I was completely honest with potential buyers. If you have any advice about where I can go to get instructions on repairing the timing chain cover on a 3.1 v6 let me know I still want to do this myself.

This would be my very first tear down of an engine so I would need a guide that has pictures or video to help me with identifying parts on the motor.

It is called book rate...the computer tells them how long the job should take. If the mechanic is skilled, he can do the job faster...that is just how the industry works. He did the job you would have paid a beginner mechanic 4 hours for, so why do you fault him for charging the same amount for the same job? Should be make less money because he has more skills and better tools? On the flip side, if there are bolts that snap off, stripped threads, or other problems it might take him 6 hours...but he will still only charge 4. BTW...$68 an hour is a very low rate. The last place I was working before I hurt my back and had to leave charged $110 an hour...and people were happy to pay it because the work was done correctly the first time.

They make garden hose adapter valves for the heater hoses...you just put the valve in, turn on the hose, and take off the radiator cap. Do all this while the engine is off and cold, then staart the engine and let it run like this. Once the stuff coming out of the radiator is nice and clean the system is flushed...the whole system, not just the radiator.
i do understand book rates... but when both mechanics are not licenced and the meichanics are lazy and take longer than they should well... yea lol. i worked at this garage and did more work than any other people that worked there. it was insane. and IM just and apprentce like wtf! I for one do not trust garages any more.. id rather fix it myself. but not every one can do these things. idk best thing to do is to go somewhere a freind went to and had a good experince

SO it seems that your 1999 Chevy Lumina runs a "L82" V6/3100. I looked this up on wikipedia and look what i have found!
This engine is notable for its cooling system issues which may lead to blown head gaskets and cracked heads if the engine is not maintained properly.
Hate to break it to ya but it looks like you didn't research the car you bought very well.

Ok onto repairing it. I can't exactly tell you what to to but i found this. A forum dedicated to your 3100 V6 L82 that runs your Chevy Lumina.

I'm hoping that helps.

Yeah thanks for the link it helps alot. Fortunately for me like I said the intake gasket isn't really a big problem for now. The mechanic said it was a very slow leak on one side, My problem right now is that timing chain cover. It has stopped leaking completely since I added the Bars. I'm glad I had it checked out so now I know exactly what I'm dealing with. I'm concerned about all that stop leak in the system though it might cause my heater core or water pump to go bad.

Even if it isn't leaking too bad, flush that system before the crap they put in there causes you massive problems.

I just flushed it all out and added some more Bar's. The most expensive one they have 29.99. I haven't seen any leaks yet and everything works perfectly. Might take the advice about selling it.
