Using PS3 as a linux PC
okay so i was on the PS3 general discuission section and a dude called clarks0n wanted to know how to use his PS3 as a PC, so i thought other people might want to know to so i replied to him with a tut and decided to make a TUT for all of you, so here it is. Message me if there is any mistakes and i will update it, i made this in a rush btw.
okay first off all what youre gonna need to do is Back Up your PS3, this is done by entering the system settings and should be found as system backup or something along them roots, this will only backup savedata just incase in the futture you wanna use your PS3 as a PS3 again. too back up media like music etc. you will need to do this manually. your next step is to upgrade your PS3's drive on the fat PS3 this is located on the side off the console and there is a removable panel inside this there is a casing containing the PS3's drive, no formating is needed the PS3 automatically formats the drive when its turned on. On the Slim PS3 you turn over the ps3 at the top of the bottom of the PS3 if that makes scence :/ there is a small strip which sort of flips out if you know what i mean this strip then contains a screw underneeth if you simply remove this screw you will be able to remove the drive the drive is accessed by opening the pannel which is freed when removing the screw and the rest is just like the proccess for the Fat PS3. Our final step is to install the OS this is probably the hardest step for you. PS3 can't run Microsoft Windows or Apple's OS X but it is possible to run Linux on the PS3, my personal favorite Linux OS on PS3 has to be Ubuntu. Go google some programe called kboot helps install Ubuntu on the PS3. The first step in loading the new operating system is to create a drive partition. Select "System Settings," then "Format Utility" from the menu of the PS3. Choose "Custom" and allot 10 GB to the "Other OS." Choose "Quick Format," then restart. Once the partition is made, the OS can be loaded from the Ubuntu disc using the "Install Other OS" function under "Settings" in the PS3 menu. This installs kboot, which allows the PS3 to install Ubuntu. Switching between the PlayÂ*Station operating system and Ubuntu is not as straightforward as dual booting a standard PC. In fact, after installing the kboot file, you need to delve back into the PS3's System Menu to designate "Other OS" under "Default System" before the PS3 even installs the full Ubuntu OS. When you restart the PS3, plug a mouse and keyboard into the USB ports. (PlayStation controllers are good for gaming, but terrible for computing.) The console will boot using your Ubuntu disc and install the new system. (Expect it to take about an hour.) by the way if ever wanting to switch back to the origianl PS3 OS, reboot the console, and at the boot prompt, type "boot-os-game," then press Enter. This brings the PS3 back to earth rather then dev world. i would advise buying a "real" super pc rather then doing this but this is the cheapest method.

For what Firmware did you make this tutorial because it is for OFW as I understand and that goes to max 3.15... and OtherOS++ for CFW 3.55 is much better than the $ony OtherOS...
Edit: 1. Download Rebug 3.55 CFW with OtherOS++ support and install it (don't forget the Recovery Menu-- Restore PS3 system) 2. Download Red Ribbon Linux for PS3 3. follow this guide starting at point 4: http://wiki.gitbrew.org/wikibrew/PS3..._PS3_models.29 after partitioning the partitions run the Live Red Ribbon CD and install Red Ribbon from there. Done....

Well, the PS3 ONLY has 256MB of RAM which is hardly anything by today's computing standards - http://playstation.about.com/od/ps3/...sDetails_3.htm |

I also forgot to mention this too - Linux isn't fully optimized to run on a PS3 yet due to the following factors:
- Incomplete RSX driver(s), and; - Restricted hardware access (in addition to the lack of RAM), especially the CPU. Basically, if the software/firmware is poorly optimized for the aforementioned hardware, then the overall computing speeds will be vastly reduced and hence the performance of Linux on a PS3 is poor in comparison to running Linux on a PC, REGARDLESS of how good the hardware is in raw computing terms. |
