Exclamation PS3 Firmware downgradable with new HDD??

Hi All,

please have a read of some questions i picked up from a site here in NZ and can you tell me is this true??? is it that simple to downgrade your firmware?

(Person1) Hi there, just wondering how you are able to downgrade firmware?. are you using a Prog skeet? E3 downgrader? please let me know as I am a Ps3 Nutter & have almost every type of accessory & hundreds of games, but am a total novice about how to downgrade, as I was thinking of dual booting my ps3 with 2 hdds instead, cheers.

(Person2) Hi, it's very easy, just remove the HDD from the PS3, plug it into a pc and completely format it. Next download the firmware version you want to run, and plug the HDD back into the PS3 and boot. The PS3 will ask you to plug in removable media with an 'Update' or firmware on it, so you do that, load it and ALAKAZAAAM you are now running an older firmware version.

(Person1) Thanks for the tip, will definately try this I may just purchase a new Hdd and try it with that, thanks mate your a legend!!!!

(Person2) No worries, I forgot to add - The firmware file you download is a .PUP file and needs to be placed in a folder called 'UPDATE' and then the 'UPDATE folder needs to be placed inside a folder named 'PS3' on the usb stick. This is needed so the PS3 can find the file!!

You were trolled. You need either Progskeet or E3 to flash a lower firmware. You can do a fast swap (with 2 HDD's) between say 4.00 OFW & your favourite 3.55 CFW. There are plenty of guides on this method in this forum, search. Kia ora.

I thought it was a little to good to be true.... thank you for your quick reply!

Please, can you point me in the right direction? I'm looking to buy a PS3 have come across some with firmware 2.xx and 3.72 etc and the rest seem to be on 4.00 ... can the ones that have been upgraded to 4.00 be downgraded with out soldering etc or can the other versions above be done by software no progskeet or e3 ?? thanks heaps.

a ps3 on 3.55 or below can run CFW 3.55 without any downgrading hardware
tutorials enough on that here on ps3hax

ps3's on 3.56/4.0 need a hardware flasher to downgrade to 3.55cfw
best thing is you can swap CFW with OFW with 2 hdd's and the backups
warning this downgrading depends on what model it is
not every slim model can be downgraded
full compatibility list here

Thanks jhax78, i watched christechtv's tutorial on the e3 flasher which doesn't look to bad, but do you have to leave the e3 flasher in the ps3 ?? can you downgrade then remove the e3 flasher and put the hdd back to how it was or at least stick say a 1tb hard drive in?

my modding days have previously been with the xbox 1 and ps2 modchips just to let peepz know
