Fan Problem
Hi
I am having a problem with a 40gb fat system. The system runs for about 10-20 mins and slowly the fan kicks up to full speed. This happens when on the xmb with nothing playing. The system isn't hot or blowing out hot air. I did replace the thermal paste as I repaired another system and had some left over. I have replaced the paste again and have done a full format of the drive but the problem still happens. What else can I try? Thanks |

Have you tried calling Sony about it and getting their opinion?
You might just be worrying about nothing. Does it stay loud for a long time (20 or more minutes) or until you shut it off? I had one that seemed to have a loud fan every now and then, but nothing bad ever happened and it would stop randomly, usually without me even noticing. |

I haven't left it on long enough to see if it kicks back down as it does it with out anything playing on the system.

I guess wait and/or stop worrying. I mean, you seemed to have taken a pretty good precaution, so i can't see anything too bad happening especially if you don't notice any heat.

I need to add I didn't have this problem until I replaced the thermal paste.
How much of a pain is it to take off the tops of the gpu/cpu? |

Ok, are you sure you have good contact to the heatsinks then?
If not take care of that first, it'll cause problems. Check youtube for some vids on removing the heatspreaders IF its required. gpu can be done somewhat easily, cpu is a pain. I've tried on 3 cpu's & destroyed 2. Be careful! |

Does this cause a problem even if the system isn't running hot? Is it because the contact underneath the spreader is poor? I would have expected the system to be hot. Ps the full format I did was through the ps3 itself but have read people saying to connect it to a pc? I only have a laptop but have a sata usb caddy, is it ok to use this to perform a full pc format? Also the system has never shown signs of overheating before this problem ie ylod.
