Just checked the system and I didnt put paste on the cpu. It is now not kicking up again till 20 mins.

I think it is a problem with the cpu as I took it the psu and drive out just after the system had kicked up and the spring plate on the cpu was warmer than the gpu.

Just warm to touch not hot. I used to build computers and have cpus hotter than this!

Could the thermal sensor be knackard? I have never reflowed the system.

I am thinking of trying to do the cpu as the fan is getting really annoying now.

KB said not to try the blade method. Is the glue round the edge of the cpu the same as the glue on the gpu? Can it be heated up to soften the glue.

Any other tips on how to get the heatspreader off with out damage?

What damage is caused using the blade method? Someone said track damage is this to the cpu or the motherboard?

KB what did you use to grind down the edge of the? Dremal?

Has anyone got a pic of the cpu with out the heatspreader on it?

Thanks.

I found this link on cpu/gpu, check out what happened to the gpu. Also there is a link to a youtube vid on cpu heatspreader removel using a paint scraper razorblade holder.

http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=734438

Also I found these on ebay, what do you think of it. will it have any benifit?

Afaik if it's not a BC model you're 99% sure to break the CPU if you remove the IHS by cutting the glue. No way to remove it without cutting the traces (maybe possible with some heat but you'd need a reflow/reball station).
The damage you can cause with the razor blade is broken traces on the CPU PCB (not the die itself unless you shove the blade in like crazy).

Here's a pic of my mobo without the IHS's (ignore the white stuff on the Cell PCB, I *almost* broke some traces while removing it since I was running the blade the wrong way, and I used some thermal adhesive to cover the revealed traces) :

Holy crap, I heard of this happening to ONE person but I was pretty sure that wouldn't happen on a 90nm GPU. I guess you gotta be careful... maybe heat from a hair dryer is good enough to not get this but I'm not even sure anymore lol.

Don't use those copper shims you linked, if anything they'll make things worse.

aye, those things make the situation worse... The only thing i can come up with is that you have a damaged thermal sensor, if you have any pc cpu thermal sensors you should try giving a check to the temperatures before going any further... Maybe you have no actual problem of overheating

So are the tracers hidden in the glue ie raised ontop of the cpu? or is when you come to remove the old glue from the cpu? or is it from the blade angleing down as you are cutting through the glue and scraping the top of the cpu?

forget removing the glue, try monitoring the temperatures first... If temperatures on the chips are normal, you won't need to remove the heatspreader

How can the thermal sensor be damaged? I have never reflowed the system.

Would this do to check the temp? I have got a psu that I can power it from.

What should I be expecting the temps to be? and I am guessing the probe go's inbetween the the heatsink and cpu?

Speaking of which, is there any application to monitor the CPU/GPU temperature?

yeah, that will do just fine, i use one of those too. I have no idea how but you have changed thermal compound both above and under rsx, and above cpu, and you say heatspreaders are flat, it should not go at 100% in just 5 minutes... AFAIK there is no application to monitor the temperatures, but if there is, or if you wish to make one, be welcome and feel free to post it here at ps3hax : )
