Exclamation Updating OFW from 3.01 to 3.55

SOOOOOOO I bought this fat PS3 off my friend for $20.
It was in a bunch of pieces, got it all put back together and works ok... it wont recognize my ripoff PS3 controller (didn't come with one, so i decided to be cheap) and I want update the OFW (to hopefully fix my controller problem) and JB it... only problem is whenever I try and update from 3.01 I get an Error saying "data is corrupt". -__- Iv tried updating to 3.55, 3.41, 3.21, and 3.10. Iv done it in recover and just from "storage device" error messages all day long! Iv checked the MD5 on the PUP and its totally fine... this is my first time trying to JB a PS3 and I like to do my research but thus far I cant find a solution.

any suggestions?

And if your USB drive isn't the problem you might want to format the PS3 hard drive and restore to factory/default settings. Also only use a PUP from a trusted site, try the downloads section here.
