In fact if they only have 3 or less then you won't be able to do anything to it. But you are right about the pricing....there is no way a old 60gb model can be the same price as a goddamn new one...that is outrageous. Whoever is selling it is ripping people off.
Buying an used BC model isn't that worth it unless you want to spend A LOT of time fixing the cooling. I bought mine used a few months ago and it took me a few weeks to fix the cooling properly so that it would stop making so much noise (now my fan goes up to level 2 in 10 mins or so but never higher than that).

Here's a small list of things you have to render a BC model more or less silent during use :

- Replace PSU (if the original one is a ZSSR5391A)
- Replace internal fan if it's 15 blade, for a 19 blade
- Remove the heatspreaders from the CPU and GPU (very delicate process, with risk of breaking the board if you're not doing it right)
- Lap the heatsink AND the heatspreaders on BOTH sides (extremely tedious process, the heatspreaders are a ****ing pain to lap, this is needed because due to low quality metal the heatsink and heatspreaders tend to warp after a while resulting in poor thermal transfer).
- Use the highest quality possible thermal paste (excluding gallium-based ones) when reassembling the PS3
- Tighten the cooling block by putting washers between the top of the screw and the backplate (needed after lapping)

If you don't do all of the above, your BC PS3 will run quite hot and loud and eventually YLOD (well it will certainly YLOD anyway even with those fixes but it will take much longer). All this is costly and tedious, and obviously not everyone can/wants to do that. Besides not everyone cares about PS2 games. (All PS3's play PS1 games, but you probably already know that).
Also even with the fixes mentioned above, the console is still louder than a Slim and this can bother some people.

Also, new PS3's without USB slots at all? I don't know what you're on, but I'd like to try some.

lol True but I've never opened my system I know I should but honestly it's not my personal system, its like a family system. If my parents see me opening it up they will go nuts. I know how to open it and I sure as hell know it needs to be opened because we have had it for years. Oh and don't get me wrong I didn't know they had a model without usb ports either but one obviously exists because a friend of ours owns one. I didn't see it my self but apparently my parents saw it. And they were going to backup a save file from it but couldn't or else they would have if it had a usb port. When they told me I kind of was shocked. But ya...I mean ultimately you could get a new slim like you said that comes with older firmware then get a USB Cobra then you'd be set for life. lol Because then you could play all sorts of backups. lol So ya truth be told I'd love to update to a newer Slim model as long as it has 4 usb slots and an older firmware. I'd like to have my "own" system because I hate sharing it. lol I did all the cfw stuff to it my self. My parents are ok with it. But like I said opening it up..I'd be glad to do but I don't want to get yelled at. lol Especially if I end up not being able to put the inside stuff back together. I know there is tutorials though...so I can't imagine it being too hard. I basically just want to take the dust out of it...

I got it cause he's 12 yrs old and wanted an Xbox. His old brother stole his cables and controllers so that's why he offered it for $30. After reading in these forums I knew it was a steal so I gave him $70 to clear my conscience.

@alienkid So you know the PS3 can read 2TB external & 1TB internal. I seen you thought it can read only up to 1.5TB. Just letting you know for your own knowledge. I have x3 -> 2TBs External powered ,x2 Seagate ,x1 WD, x 1TB Samsung spin, for internal.

So the PS3 reads up to 2TB external/1TB internal 4 sure . I think 3TB will not work though.

No. Just no. I'm seriously starting to think you're a troll.
There are no PS3 models without USB ports. How the hell do you charge the controllers?

What would a 12 year old be doing with a debug 60gb PS3?

So what? I have a pre-production Ceramic White one and I had a PS2 TOOL console that has the name of the company that was stollen from on the top (I asked it as a present from a friend working on the company, I played with it and solved my curiosity for it and I returned it to him, really not usefull anymore either way).
Black market is filled with stuff like that, you can even get prototype versions of the PS3 that are in the size of a small freezer from seller that is like 16 years old children, TEST consoles aren't thaaat rare.
What is rare is the refference tool consoles, it's not like you can sell them that easy, if one gets missing the whole ebay will be filled with FBI guys.

About that purchase, I'd first do what @pereb27 said and then see if i'd buy that used one. But I would be carefull that even if the console is hackable it's still better this used one than buying the new one and buying a hardware flasher, it's more expensive it total cost...
